JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The College/Unit of Educational Equity/Upward Bound is seeking applicants for part-time job of [title].

Job duties to include:

  • Deliver 20-30 hours of ELA content for high school students from across Pennsylvania from 7/13-7/17 remotely via Zoom.
  • Attend 10 hours of professional learning and orientation programming beginning in May through the start of the Summer Academy in June.
  • Meet with the Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator for a pre-summer one-on-one.
  • Create a course scope and sequence to be delivered to Upward Bound Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator by June 1, 2025.
  • Participate in weekly instructional staff meetings during the summer academy.
  • Potentially serve as "second authorized adult" in another course.
  • Participate in one scheduled "Meet Your Instructor" panel during the first week of the summer academy from 1-2:30pm on Thursday, June 18.
  • Build authentic, meaningful, and professional relationships with participating students.
  • Maintain all course materials.
  • Attend all scheduled course sessions.
  • Maintain attendance records.
  • Communicate efficiently and clearly with all Upward Bound staff and Residential Mentors.

Requirements, qualifications, and/or competencies:

  • Must have at least a bachelor's degree with relevant teaching experience or are an undergraduate student majoring in Education or related field or extensive teaching assistant experience and have earned a minimum of 30 college credits by June 2026,
  • Access to reliable and stable Internet to deliver instruction via Zoom.
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with high school youth from diverse backgrounds.
  • Capacity to model maturity, sound judgment, common sense, and professionalism.
  • Ability to enforce program and university policies consistently and objectively.
  • Must pass all required background checks for working with minors.

Schedule:

  • Summer Academy Dates:
    • Operates Monday, June 15 - Friday, July 24
    • ELA Instructional Week at via Zoom (July 13 - July 17)
    • Meet Your Instructors (June 18) via Zoom
  • Professional Learning:
    • Paid mandatory Professional Learning is held remotely starting in May through the start of the summer academy. ELA Instructors must be able to access Zoom.
    • Paid mandatory one-on-one with the Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator is scheduled at your leisure before during the month of June.
  • Work Expectations:
    • Daytime and afternoon class sessions from 9:30 AM - 12 PM and 1 PM - 2:30 PM.
  • Compensation & Benefits:
    • $35.00 per hour for all work.
    • The expected total hours worked for this position is 75 hours including all curricular planning, class instruction, and other relevant duties.
    • Program-related admission fees (tickets for museums, science centers, and other activities) are provided, if applicable.

Compensation:

The starting rate for this job is $35.00.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.

Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and the Pennsylvania Act of 1988, Penn State publishes a combined Annual Security and Annual Fire Safety Report (ASR). The ASR includes crime statistics and institutional policies concerning campus security, such as those concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters.
