Overview
The Department of Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences (ADVS) at Utah State University (USU) is seeking applicants for an Assistant Professor, tenure-track position in Animal and Dairy Science. This 12-month, fiscal-year faculty position carries responsibilities in Teaching (60%), Extension (35%), and Service (5%) in the S.J. and Jessie E. Quinney College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (QANR).

The successful candidate will contribute to the department's undergraduate and graduate teaching programs in dairy science and livestock production systems and develop Extension programming that supports Utah livestock industries and youth development, with particular emphasis on dairy cattle production, workforce development, and experiential learning. Early career applicants, including individuals completing their Ph.D. prior to the start date, are encouraged to apply. The position complements our statewide Extension Specialists' roles and emphasizes teaching excellence, youth engagement, and the creation of original educational resources. Candidates with expertise in applied dairy production systems, herd management, and experiential learning in dairy or livestock programs are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities
Teaching (60%)
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in animal and dairy science, including:
    • ADVS 2130 Dairy Production Practices (3 cr.)
    • ADVS 5130/6130 Dairy Management (3 cr.)
    • ADVS 4210 Applied Reproduction and Artificial Insemination (2 cr.)
    • Additional courses assigned by the department head based on program needs and faculty expertise
  • Provide experiential learning opportunities and mentorship for students.
  • Advise and mentor students involved in experiential learning activities such as Dairy Challenge, dairy evaluation, and related student programs.
  • Collaborate with faculty to ensure alignment of dairy and livestock teaching programs with industry needs.

Extension (35%)
  • Develop and deliver Extension programs that support Utah livestock industries, with emphasis on dairy cattle production and youth engagement in livestock and agricultural systems.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with dairy producers, livestock stakeholders, industry partners, and youth organizations.
  • Create original Extension educational products such as fact sheets, curricula, workshops, online resources, and multimedia content.
  • Support statewide dairy programming in coordination with the ADVS Dairy Extension Specialist.
  • Utilize both traditional and modern Extension delivery methods including workshops, webinars, field days, and digital media.

Service (5%)
  • Participate in service activities at the department, college, and university levels, as well as professional service in relevant associations.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • D. in Animal Science, Dairy Science, or a closely related, relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of dairy cattle production systems and applied reproduction.
  • Demonstrated preparation to teach courses in dairy production, dairy management, and applied reproduction.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working with students, producers, and youth audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, Extension personnel, and industry stakeholders.
  • Willingness and ability to travel statewide and obtain a valid Utah driver's license.
  • Willingness to participate in some evening or weekend Extension programming.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching at the undergraduate level.
  • Evidence of professional development in teaching.
  • Experience with Extension education or development of Extension materials.
  • Experience with dairy youth education, dairy cattle evaluation, or student coaching activities.
  • Familiarity with land-grant university teaching and Extension systems.
