Position Summary: The Bridge Inspection Team Leader will be responsible for conducting NBIS inspections of in-service transportation structures such as bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and traffic device support structures. The Bridge Inspection Team Leader will receive general supervision from the Project Manager and will be required to perform the duties of an inspection team leader. Duties of the position include planning and scheduling inspections, performing inspections, and preparing inspection reports.

In addition to bridge inspection, this position will also include responsibility for engineering design using knowledge of general engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute and coordinate assignments with limited supervision.



Essential Functions and Responsibilities



  • Experience in serving as Team Leader performing in-service bridge safety inspections
  • Ability to work on multiple project assignments in a dynamic, fast-paced team-oriented environment
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office software including WORD and EXCEL
  • Plan, schedule, conduct or coordinate detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope.
  • Perform or check design computations
  • Design projects in accordance with client specifications and guidelines, using design software and drawing tools
  • Assist in the preparation of engineering documents for advertisement and construction
  • Prepare and compile contract plans, specifications and estimates
  • Attend meetings with clients and assist taking meeting minutes
  • Coordinate with other disciplines and understand how they fit into the project and design.
  • Quality review of project design in accordance with the Project Management Plan.
  • Technical oversight and guidance/support of Design Engineers within department



Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities



  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited engineering program
  • 4+ years' experience in performing in-service bridge safety inspections and Bridge, Culvert and Retaining Wall Design Experience
  • Qualify as a Bridge Safety Inspection Team Leader as defined by the National Bridge Inspection Standards (23 CFR 650, Subpart C)
  • Proof of successfully completing a FHWA approved comprehensive bridge inspection safety course
  • Engineer-in-training certification



Preferred Experience



  • North Carolina Professional Engineering License is a plus
  • North Carolina EIT or North Carolina PE license (Preferred)
  • Bridge Inspection experiences with NCDOT
  • Bridge design experience is a plus
  • Knowledge of NCDOT WIGINS software
  • Experience in Bridge, Culvert, and Retaining Wall Design
  • Proficient in MicroStation, Bentley Software (OBD, RCPIER and Conspan), ETCulvert and other structural analysis software packages
  • Understanding of NCDOT guidelines, procedures, and plan preparation



Working Conditions

Work is performed in the office (50% of the time) and in the field (50% of the time).

Field work will be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions and on uneven terrain or surfaces. Candidate must have the ability to perform inspections while bending, kneeling, or standing, and lift or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds as needed. Work will require the operation of access equipment and performing inspections at heights requiring fall protection.

Office work is performed within a general office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
