Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital

Job Description Duke Employee Occupational Health & Wellness (EOHW) within the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health is seeking an experienced Occupational Health Nurse for a full-time position. Duke Employee Occupational Health and Wellness (EOHW) provides services for over 45,000 faculty and staff of the Duke University Health System and Duke University.

JOB DUTIES



  • Perform a variety of professional duties involved in developing and delivering occupational health nursing services to Duke employees at the Employee Occupational Health & Wellness (EOHW) Clinics.
  • Provide direct occupational health patient care and surveillance services, including placement and wellness screenings, health assessments, audiometric and vision testing, respirator clearance exams, spirometry testing, adult immunizations, blood-borne pathogen and other communicable illness exposure care and follow-up, injury/exposure care, and fitness-for-duty evaluations.
  • Provide pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screenings of employees, ensuring proper collection, documentation, and adherence to testing protocols.
  • Deliver individual counseling and education to employees on health maintenance, results of health screenings, and participation in health promotion activities.
  • Identify care needs for EOHW patients and collaborate with the Nurse Manager and other occupational health leaders in developing standards of care, implementing policies and procedures, and enhancing staff and patient education.
  • Collaborate with on-site members of the occupational health team, including occupational medicine physicians, industrial hygienists, and safety engineers, to support safe and effective clinic operations. Participate in continuing education to maintain current knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Implement proper protocols for breath alcohol testing, drug screen handling, audiometer and spirometer testing, and other occupational health services as needed.
  • Perform nasopharyngeal swabbing procedures and assist with self-swab collections; operate Point-of-Care (POC) testing machines accurately and ensure proper cleaning and maintenance after use.
  • Handle and label lab specimens using best practices and ensure delivery to the laboratory within required timeframes.
  • Utilize Epic software to schedule an arrive patients, place lab test orders, print labels, document visits, and check patients out efficiently; maintain proficiency in the REDCap database for accurate data entry and tracking.
  • Manage calls from employees reporting illness, symptoms or potential exposure to other communicable illness; apply established protocols, provide guidance, and schedule lab collections or video visits as indicated.
  • Document employee health information and dispositions in secure systems, maintaining accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance with institutional policies.
  • Communicate clinical or operational concerns requiring follow-up to leadership, ensuring timely intervention and appropriate employee support.
  • Utilize best practices in infection control to clean and disinfect equipment and patient-facing areas in accordance with institutional and CDC guidelines.
  • Develop, maintain, and audit employee health records to ensure continuity of care, confidentiality, and accuracy in record keeping.
  • Provide clinical guidance and feedback to staff while supporting implementation of EOHW policies, procedures, and performance standards.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge and experience documenting patient care in an electronic medical record. Excellent verbal, written, organizational and presentation skills. Ability to make knowledgeable clinical assessments and judgments. Ability to educate staff. Ability to provide counseling and emotional support with compassion and respect for the individual. Ability to provide support to the members of the care team (teamwork).

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires graduation from an accredited nursing program. BSN preferred.

Experience

Experience in Occupational Health; minimum 3 years of clinical experience required.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required.
