Job Summary

This position is responsible for the organization and preparation of complex lab equipment and materials for laboratory experiments primarily in the instructional areas of general biology, environmental biology, anatomy and physiology, and microbiology. This position assists in providing supervision to part-time workers and work study. This position will communicate effectively with instructors, vendors, coworkers, and other campus departments. The Lab Tech Sr. will work with a diverse population of faculty, staff and students in multiple labs at multiple locations.

Essential Functions

40% - Prepare, organize, and set up complex lab equipment, supplies, solutions, for student lab exercises; replenish, clean, and store lab materials; clean labs and properly dispose of lab materials, chemicals, cultures, supplies, equipment and waste products.

20% - Maintain and repair equipment; maintain inventory of supplies and materials, including purchasing. Perform preventative maintenance. Care for plants, animals, and preserved specimens as needed. Research sources of supply by contacting science lab vendors. Receive deliveries of supplies and equipment.

15% - Leads other lab support staff including a part-time lab staff by providing work directions.

10% - Maintains a safe lab environment by following safety regulations and recommended practices; remain up-to-date on training.

10% Interact with faculty and staff to optimize lab operations.

5% Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and two years of experience such as providing assistance to students in an instructional setting; and/or preparing, maintaining and delivering equipment, supplies or other related instructional materials used for laboratory activities in area of assignment.

An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered

Desired Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree or higher in the biological sciences or related field with at least 4 credit hours each of biology and chemistry (please provide unofficial transcripts that documents degree or course completion as attachment to application)

2. Two (2) years of academic or industrial laboratory experience, including the knowledge and practice of safe handling and storage of hazardous chemicals, adherence to basic lab safety procedures, equipment, and safety regulations.

3. Experience in biology laboratory operations, including their preparation, particularly in the context of a teaching lab.

4. Experience in the preparation, maintenance, and proper disposal of microbial cultures.

5. Experience in directing the work of others and/or monitoring entry level workers in a science-related area.

6. Experience following detailed laboratory procedures and using precise methodologies.

7. One year of full-time, relevant MCCCD experience within the previous two years

**** Experience within other community college systems or higher education institutions is valued and may be considered in addition to MCCCD experience. External candidates are encouraged to apply.

Special Working Conditions

* Work schedule: Full time. M-F 8-5pm. Some flexibility in schedule. Summer M-Th 10 hour days.
* May be exposed to chemicals, fumes, bacteria, fungi and particulates which may present health hazards if not handled properly.
* May require frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions
* May require lifting objects up to 25 lbs
* May be required to work in an area of light to heavy noise levels daily
