I. JOB OVERVIEW






Job Description Summary:
The Office of Sponsored Projects ( OSP) within the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) supports the university's research mission by providing oversight of externally sponsored research.

This position serves as a central resource to support the research community at GW by providing guidance and stewardship for researchers and administrators. The core responsibility of this role is to ensure effective and timely handling of sponsored project proposals, as well as the interpretation, compliance review and submission of proposals on behalf of GW for projects funded by federal and state agencies, foundations, and other public and private sources. This position is located centrally and has enterprise-wide scope.
This position provides independent expert support in highly specialized areas of sponsored projects and research administration under the direction of the Assistant Director, Sponsored Projects, Pre-Award. As a member of the pre-award team in the Office of Sponsored Projects ( OSP), this position is responsible for the compliance review, delegated authority for signature/approval, and direct submission to the sponsor. Compliance review includes federal and non-federal RFPs, Solicitations, NOFOs for proposals, sponsored projects agreements and contracts prior to award.
This position is responsible for coordinating, as necessary, with other university offices, including but not limited to the Office of General Counsel, Risk Management, Grants & Contracts Accounting as well as units within the OVPR working in partnership with the faculty, researchers and administrators to support proposal submission and award acceptance, contributing to developing and implementing efficient processes and procedures for OSP pre-award.

  • Independently reviews, escalates RFPs, Solicitations, NOFOs, sponsored project agreements, related terms and conditions with problematic provisions and stipulations, uncommon circumstances, and potential compliance risks.
  • Reviews and analyzes proposals for completeness and adherence to university policies and best practice, conformance with sponsor guidelines, relevant compliance restrictions, identification of risks, financial and academic requirements, applicable federal and state laws, and regulations impacting sponsored projects to ensure that university interests and rights are protected.
  • Advises principal investigators, researchers, research administration/departmental staff, and appropriate OVPR staff regarding nuances to mitigate risks and ensure compliance.
  • Serves as a resource and mentor for pre-award staff. Participates in the development, implementation, and revision of processes and workflow to ensure effective and compliant business processes and operations under the direction of the Assistant Director.


Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 7 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 5 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Wide-ranging experience and expertise with the principles, practices, and procedures relative to Federal and non-Federal sponsored research in an academic environment is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both in written and verbal form.
  • Keen data management, analytical, customer service, and organizational skills are a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, and the willingness to learn and share information and new ideas.
  • Working knowledge of relevant Uniform Guidance and the Office of Management and Budget regulations is preferred.
  • Ability to work within various sponsor electronic portals related to sponsored projects (e.g., NSF, Research.gov, FastLane, eRA Commons, NSPIRES, etc.) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with using Internet search engines, Adobe software, and Microsoft Office applications and databases is desired.
  • Solid knowledge of Federal programs and procedures for sponsors, including but not limited to the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Energy (DOE), the Department of Defense (DOD), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), as well as corporate and private funders, including associations and foundations is highly preferred.

Hiring Range $80,927.47 - $111,231.23
