LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE (LPN)
INTRODUCTION
This healthcare organization operates within a secure residential care environment and provides comprehensive medical services through a multidisciplinary clinical team. The organization serves as the clinical authority responsible for patient health services within the facility.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Nurses are a core component of the healthcare team and provide care 24 hours per day. As part of an integrated primary care team (including nursing staff, medical providers, dental providers, behavioral health providers, and administrative staff), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) practice in a collaborative clinical environment delivering ambulatory, emergency, mental health, and infirmary care. Common LPN responsibilities include intake screening to identify conditions requiring referral or treatment, administering medications, supporting providers during clinical visits, and delivering treatments such as wound care, electrocardiograms, ear lavage, phlebotomy, nebulizer therapy, and tuberculosis skin testing.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduate of a Practical Nurse program approved by a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a hospital, medical office, or outpatient clinical setting.
- Experience in a detention, correctional, residential, or institutional healthcare setting preferred.
REQUIRED LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION
- Current, full, and unrestricted LPN license in the state where the duty station is located or a compact state permitting practice at the duty location. Any changes in licensure must be reported immediately.
- This position does not require privileging.
- Current BLS for Healthcare Providers certification through the American Heart Association.
- Certification in correctional health nursing or related specialty preferred.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides direct patient care within scope of practice in accordance with licensure, certification, and competencies.
- Administers medications via oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, topical, ophthalmic, and other approved routes.
- Performs intake and prescreening assessments using established protocols and refers abnormal findings to appropriate providers.
- Performs treatments such as wound care, vital signs, electrocardiograms, and other ordered procedures.
- Collects laboratory specimens and performs point-of-care testing or prepares specimens for processing.
- Responds to medical emergencies, provides stabilization, and facilitates transfer to a higher level of care when necessary.
- Assists healthcare providers through data collection, patient education, and supportive care activities.
- May participate in court-ordered or involuntary medical care as required.
DUTY HOURS / SCHEDULING
- Facility operations occur 24/7/365; staff must respond during emergency activations.
- Availability for day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts is required.
- On-call availability is not required.
SECURITY REQUIREMENTS
- Candidates must successfully complete required background and fitness determinations to be eligible for employment.
- Continued employment is contingent upon maintaining favorable background status.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Position requires prolonged standing, walking, bending, lifting, and responding quickly to emergencies.
- Must possess sufficient agility, dexterity, vision, and hearing.
- Must be able to respond to medical emergencies within four minutes and perform CPR while standing or kneeling.
- Must be able to assist patients or staff during emergency evacuations.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
This is a contract position. Supervision and performance expectations are established by the contracting organization, with clinical oversight provided by designated medical leadership.
