OPEN RANK: VISITING FACULTY OF TRANSLATION

The Department of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures, and Cultures at The University invites applications for a full-time Visiting Faculty of Translation position for the 2026-2027 academic year. This is a one-year, 100% time, non-tenure track position with benefits, renewable up to a maximum of three years total, depending on program need and College approval.

The Visitor will join a translation area within the LLLC that encompasses an undergraduate major and minor in Translation, an MFA in Literary Translation, and a graduate Certificate in Literary Translation. The successful candidate will teach three courses per semester (3/3 load), primarily at the undergraduate level, with the possibility of graduate teaching depending on the candidate's profile and experience. Course assignments will be drawn from the translation curriculum and may include courses in translation and global society, translation in the humanities across multiple modes and disciplines, and undergraduate literary translation workshops, as well as courses in translation theory and criticism or topics in the candidate's area of specialization. The Visitor will also mentor students in their translation work, contribute to undergraduate capstone and honors thesis supervision, and support students in professional pursuits such as publication submissions and grant applications.

The LLLC is home to a nationally recognized community of translators and scholars working across more than a dozen languages and is affiliated with the International Writing Program, one of the world's foremost residency programs for writers. Iowa City is a UNESCO City of Literature and has been consistently ranked among the top places to live in the United States.

• Applicants must hold a terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in literary translation, translation studies, comparative literature, or a related field at the time of appointment.

• A record of literary translation publications and/or scholarly publication in translation studies
• Experience teaching at the college level

• Experience teaching literary translation courses at the undergraduate level
• Experience teaching literary translation at the graduate level
• Experience mentoring students in translation and professional development
• Demonstrated range across genres (poetry, prose, drama) or across more than one language pair
• Experience or expertise in non-literary translation and/or the language service provider industry (such as legal, technical, scientific, community interpreting, localization, or subtitling)
