Job Summary

Carry out several routine tests using various types of testing equipment. The testing procedures are standardized and well defined. Use a set of assembled testing equipment designed for the tests to be done. Calculations may be required using prescribed formulae/ graphs/ tables and clearly defined procedures. Complications/problems are referred to a technologist/technician. Follow standard procedures (written or verbal) with readily available help. Others set priorities but the workflow may require adjusting to changing demands. Record test results but do not interpret beyond what is necessary to indicate the need for some modifications in the procedures. Note unusual occurrences. May collect samples for testing using a straightforward sampling procedure.

Job Description: Distillation Laboratory Technician

Responsibilities:

  • Operating Distillation Equipment: Set up and operate batch or continuous stills to separate intermediate products or impurities from compounds.

  • Monitoring and Adjusting: Turn control valves and observe recording instruments to attain specified temperatures, material flow rates, pressures, or vacuum levels.

  • Maintaining Laboratory Equipment: Clean, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments to ensure accurate results.

  • Conducting Experiments: Perform daily routine experiments, trials, and analyses to ensure raw materials and chemicals meet specified parameters.

  • Documenting Results: Log test results, prepare reports, and present findings.

  • Ensuring Safety Compliance: Follow Good Laboratory Practices and conduct risk assessments to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.

  • Supporting R&D: Assist with testing requirements for new product developments and formulations.

  • Organizing Sensory Assessments: Conduct organoleptic panels to assess the quality of products throughout the distillation process.

Skills and Experience:

  • Educational Background: Degree in a relevant scientific subject (e.g., biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics) or relevant apprenticeship.

  • Attention to Detail: Ability to keep detailed, accurate records and logs.

  • Teamwork: Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Problem-Solving: High levels of self-motivation and problem-solving skills.
