Department: WCAS Physics & Astronomy

Job Summary:

Performs experimental work fully devoted to the near- and medium-term needs of the CMS-Northwestern group. This included the ongoing analysis of Higgs and Standard Model Physics based on the CMS data taken between 2016 and 2025, including re-analysis of already published topics but significantly improved using more advanced AI/ML techniques, hardware construction for the ongoing upgrades needed for the High Luminosity LHC run.

This is a term position ending on 9/30/26. The target hiring range for this position will be between $17.05-$21.31 per hour. Offered rate will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Specific Responsibilities:

Technical

  • Data Processing
  • Hardware production

Administration

  • Maintenance of library of physics generators

Miscellaneous

Performed other duties

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Some research experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major such as physics, computer science, or electrical/computer engineering; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in hardware and software in particle physics experiment work
  • Experience with physics generators, such as MCFM and Matrix
  • Ability to develop AI/ML analysis tools
  • Experience in research and development of novel instrumentation
