What you will do
Role Overview:

The High Voltage Operations Lead will provide support to HV Operations Team in the areas of ongoing maintenance activities, manage improvement and new facilities integration project, and the development and interdepartmental communication. The HV Operations Lead will also serve, in conjunction with other High Voltage Operations staff and the Electrical Engineers in Houston, as the Company's subject matter expert on essentially all HV and compliance issues.

Main responsibilities:

  • Provide electronic, high-voltage, collection system, and substation support to operating wind farms which includes intermittent on-call support
  • Participate in the engineering, design, and construction review process including review of collection system, substation, and transmission line designs
  • Support and coordinate commissioning, start-up, and initial operating activities
  • Review and continuously improve commissioning and maintain procedures and SOP's (standard Operating Procedures)
  • Review maintenance records to identify deficiencies and recommend corrective actions to ensure compliance with the applicable NERC standards
  • Develop, review, and maintain work processes and instructions for reactive and preventatives maintenance activities
  • Working with the field personnel to review and provide recommendations for optimization of HV spare parts
  • Working with the field personnel, develop, and manage electrical troubleshooting guides and training documentation
  • Perform safe switching and grounding of HV equipment including circuit breakers, disconnect switches, power transformers, and all related components as necessary
  • Develop and manage site betterment projects including preparation of scope documents, exhibits, budgets, schedules, and requests for proposals (RFPs)
  • Serve as an example and ambassador of safe work practices
  • Interact closely with internal teams to ensure that project needs and objectives are met
  • Lead or participate to project meetings and conferences calls
  • Interpret plans, specifications, drawings, and documents related to Renewable Power Plants
  • Participate in due-diligence review of wind, solar farm, and storage electrical designs
  • Manage investigations of electrical related issues (physical as well as protection related matters) at operational projects including root cause analyses as needed
  • Perform additional duties as required

What are we looking for
Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • 10+ years of relevant technical experience
  • Necessary qualifications to operate HV equipment
  • Expect knowledge of medium- and high-voltage substation electrical equipment including relay protection systems, collection systems, transmission designs, and operations
  • Experience with power generation or distribution preferred
  • Experience with established HV field service preferred
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office, Project software suites, and SEL Equipment
  • Experience with relay and protection fundamentals
  • Experience with LOT and OTO procedures
  • Familiarity with the operations of capacitor banks, transformer load tap changers, circuit breakers, and motor/manually operated air disconnect switches
  • Understanding of Microsoft products and/or complimenting products (preferred)
  • Competency in Analytical Problem Solving, Strong Communication, Customer/Partner Relationships, and Technology Expertise (preferred)

Travel:

Up to 25%

Behavioral Requirements:

  • Ability to write operating procedures and strong problem-solving ability
  • Ability to apply pertinent industry standards and codes including Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), and ANSI (American National Standards Institute)
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and possession of valid driver's license
  • Ability to be self-motivated and work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to multi-task in a complex and dynamic environment
  • Ability to perform basic electrical mathematical calculations
  • Ability to read and understand plans, specifications, drawings, and documents relating to engineering and construction including one-line, three-line, schematics, and wiring diagrams
  • Willingness and ability to travel at least 30% of the time
  • Ability and willingness to respond to site emergencies as needed

Physical demands & working conditions:

  • Sitting/Standing/Flexibility: Ability to stand and sit for 8 or more hours when in an office environment
  • Walking: Ability to walk .5 to 2 miles per day, including across unpaved and rough surfaces when on project sites.
  • Speech/Reading: Ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently and deliver a variety of instructions furnished in written verbal, diagram, or scheduled form
  • Lifting: Ability to lift items weighing up to 10 pounds
  • Vision/Hearing: Ability to understand a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form
