Overview

The Tufts Department of Biology is dedicated to providing for our students a unified and comprehensive view of biological processes and opportunities for undergraduates to actively participate in cutting-edge biological research in molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, physiology, plant ecology, animal behavior, and conservation biology. The Department of Biology maintains an active research and teaching program on the Medford campus and in various field locales and trains and advises graduate and undergraduate students as well as post-doctoral fellows.

What You'll Do

This is a one year limited-term position with the possibility of renewal subject to funding.

Under supervision of Randi Rotjan (Principal Investigator), responsible for managing daily activities and operations of the Rotjan laboratory. Supervises lab policies and procedures set forth by the PI, implements required safety training and compliance, manages inventory and procurement of supplies and equipment. Oversees animal husbandry and seawater system; trains and supervises students and other laboratory staff on animal husbandry and seawater system maintenance. Will assist and collaborate with PI on projects related to the Blue Nature Alliance science delivery team and related projects in the lab. Will conduct a variety of experiments and analyses following established procedures and protocols under the direction of the PI. Confidentiality and trust are necessary and expected in this role. Specific responsibilities will be derived on the job but may include (and are not limited to) the essential functions listed below. Desired skills include communication & organization, lab safety & organization, aquarium skills including husbandry and maintenance/plumbing, microscopy. Technical skills require familiarity with Google suite, Microsoft suite, Zoom.
  • Keep track of inventory and order materials, supplies and reagents; ensure receipt and proper
    labeling and storage. Maintains budgets for supply inventories and allocate costs across grants.
  • Review and ensure compliance with lab and biosafety requirements, including paperwork,
    inspections, training and documentation. Maintain Lab equipment, work with vendors to troubleshoot
    problems and organize demonstrations and purchase new equipment.
  • Coordinate and maintain lab calendar , website, google drive. Assist with schedule, room
    reservations, note taking. Work with TTS to ensure computer storage systems and software are up to
    date.
  • Train and coordinate work for undergraduate research and work-study students including orientation, onboarding and ensuring effective coverage and completion of work.
  • Oversee husbandry activities including training new students and responding to emergencies in lab.
  • Act as resource for student and visitor questions and promote positive working environment.
  • Ensure laboratory is neat and organized. Other lab coordination responsibilities as assigned.
  • Conduct experiments for assigned research projects in coordination with PI.

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:
Knowledge and experience typically acquired by:
  • Bachelor's Degree BA/BS in Biology or related biological sciences field
  • 1-3 years of research laboratory experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1-3 years Prior experience coordinating laboratory activities/operations

Special Work Schedule Requirements:

This position will be 35 hours per week.


Pay Range

Minimum $24.70, Midpoint $29.50, Maximum $34.20

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
