Department OverviewThe Women's Center is a modern, state-of-the-art facility providing comprehensive obstetric and newborn care, supporting approximately 5,000 deliveries annually. We serve a diverse patient population and are committed to evidence-based, personalized care in a nurturing, family-centered environment.
Our teams across Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, Newborn Nursery, NICU, and Perinatal Services work seamlessly together to ensure smooth transitions and continuity of care for both mother and baby-from admission through discharge. Labor & Delivery The UNC REX Labor & Delivery unit delivers comprehensive care for both routine and high-risk patients throughout labor, delivery, and immediate recovery. Our unit features: 3-bay OB Emergency Department (OBED) 20 Labor Rooms 3 Operating Rooms (ORs) 3 Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) bays Nurses collaborate closely with physicians, OB Hospitalists, Certified Nurse Midwives, Nursing Assistants, and Surgical Technologists to manage everything from routine births to complex obstetric emergencies. Strong partnerships with private OB/GYN practices ensure exceptional maternal and newborn outcomes. Postpartum Unit Our Postpartum Unit is a 50-bed, family-centered care environment where nurses support mothers, newborns, and families during recovery and transition to home. Care includes: * Postpartum mothers following vaginal and cesarean deliveries * Newborns receiving routine couplet care * Antepartum patients requiring monitoring * Gynecologic surgical patients Nurses work in close partnership with Perinatal Technicians and collaborate daily with Labor & Delivery and Nursery/NICU teams to ensure safe, coordinated care and smooth transitions after delivery. Newborn Nursery The Newborn Nursery provides specialized care for healthy and late-preterm infants in their first days of life. Located within our high-volume birth center, the nursery focuses on: * Early newborn assessments and monitoring * Feeding and breastfeeding support * Parent education and bonding * Safe transition to home Our nurses and pediatric providers emphasize family-centered care while working closely with Postpartum, Labor & Delivery, and NICU teams to ensure every newborn receives individualized, seamless care from birth onward. NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Our NICU cares for approximately 450-500 infants annually and is equipped to manage complex neonatal conditions. The unit is staffed by board-certified neonatologists and a highly specialized interdisciplinary team. * Nurse-to-patient ratios range from 1:1 to 1:3 based on acuity * Advanced practice providers and respiratory therapists support critical care needs * Family-centered care is guided by a dedicated Family Advisory Council The NICU works in close coordination with Labor & Delivery, Nursery, and Postpartum teams to ensure timely escalation or transition of care when needed. Perinatal Services The Perinatal Services Department provides comprehensive education and support to families throughout their journey. This multidisciplinary team includes: Lactation Consultants Perinatal Educators Birth Certificate Registrars Certified Car Seat Technicians Newborn Screening Coordinator Services include: Breastfeeding and lactation support Prenatal and parenting education Birth certificate processing Car seat safety checks Coordination of newborn screenings Collaborative Care Model Collaboration is at the heart of UNC Rex Women's Services. Interdisciplinary teamwork-with OB/GYNs, neonatologists, pediatricians, nurses, and support staff-ensures that every patient and newborn receives safe, coordinated, and compassionate care at every step of their journey. Summary: Directs, coordinates and controls the overall operation of Rex Womens and Children's Services Department. Responsibilities: 1. Directs the development and administration of the budgets in Women's and Children's Services. Recommends types and amounts of resources required. Allocates resources based on departmental and organizational goals and objectives. Develops Master Staffing (Staffing Effectiveness Guidelines) Plans for all areas. Reviews financial and operational data evaluating quality of service, workload, revenue and expenses. Takes corrective action as needed. Monitors salary and non-salary budgets for all assigned areas. 2. Provides direction for the delivery of cost effective, quality patient care based on established regulatory, professional and organizational standards within the context of the operating vision. 3. Establishes and/or provides leadership for the attainment of departmental/service line goals in support of the organizational mission. Sponsors the Pediatric Service Line, the Women's Service Line, and serves as the administrative representative to the Pediatric and OB/GYN Executive committees. Serves as the liaison to the Neonatology Services. Represents Rex Healthcare on UNC Strategic Planning Committee for Women's Services. Establishes collegial relationships with physicians and surgeons. 4. Directs the implementation of processes to measure/assess and improve patient and departmental outcomes. Participates in performance improvement and quality improvement activities. Presents information and recommendations for actions to Performance Improvement committee. Organizes Women's and Children's Services through the selection and development of managers and Leadership team, orderly organizational design and monitoring of outcomes. 5. Ensures qualified competent staffing, space, equipment and other resources are available to meet the scope of services available. 6. Adheres to the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics. and participates/supports nursing shared governance activities. Recognizes, supports, and utilizes evidence based nursing practices and evidenced based management practices. 7. Represents Rex Healthcare with active participation in professional and community organizations.

Other information: Education Requirements: * Master's degree in nursing or equivalent required Licensure/Certification Requirements: * Must have NC RN licensure. Nursing specialty certification by exam or portfolio. Professional Experience Requirements: * Requires four (4) years of related experience and/or training. Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements: * Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conforms to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
