ASME Certified Welding Engineer (CWE)
Department: Manufacturing / Engineering
Reports To: Quality Manager

Position Summary

The ASME Certified Welding Engineer (CWE) is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining welding processes and procedures in compliance with ASME codes and industry standards for the manufacturing of shell-and-tube evaporators and related pressure-containing components used in industrial chiller systems. This role provides technical oversight and coordinates inspections for welded assemblies including pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and welded steel piping for both the water and refrigerant sides of the system.

The Welding Engineer ensures welding quality, code compliance, process efficiency, and continuous improvement across fabrication operations while supporting production, quality assurance, and product engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

Welding Engineering & Code Compliance

  • Develop, qualify, and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ) in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) and applicable sections (primarily Section VIII and Section IX).

  • Provide technical oversight of welding operations involved in manufacturing shell-and-tube evaporators and pressure-containing components.

  • Ensure compliance with ASME code requirements, company quality systems, and applicable regulatory standards.

  • Interpret engineering drawings, fabrication requirements, and welding specifications for pressure vessels and piping systems.

Manufacturing Support

  • Provide welding engineering support and process control for fabrication of shell and tube evaporators, heat exchangers, and structural components.

  • Oversee welding practices used in carbon steel and alloy steel piping for both water and refrigerant systems.

  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to optimize welding techniques, reduce distortion, and improve productivity.

  • Evaluate and approve welding consumables, equipment, and procedures to maintain code compliance.

Quality Assurance & Inspection

  • Work closely with Quality Assurance and NDE teams to ensure proper inspection and testing methods are applied and scheduled

  • Support root cause analysis of welding defects and implement corrective actions.

  • Participate in internal and external audits related to ASME certification and quality compliance.

Continuous Improvement

  • Lead initiatives to improve welding efficiency, cost, and quality in evaporator, piping fabrication, and heat exchanger manufacturing.

  • Support automation, mechanized welding, or robotic welding implementation where possible.

  • Provide technical guidance and training for welders, supervisors, and inspectors.

Documentation & Technical Support

  • Maintain welding documentation required for ASME code compliance and manufacturing records.

  • Assist engineering and product development teams in designing weld joints and fabrication methods.

  • Support customer and third-party inspections when required.

Required Qualifications

  • Certified Welding Engineer (CWE) or International Welding Engineer (IWE) certification preferred.

  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

  • Minimum 5-10 years of welding engineering experience in pressure vessel, heat exchanger, or heavy industrial fabrication.

  • Strong working knowledge of:

    • ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Sections VIII & IX)

    • Pressure vessel fabrication and Heat exchanger manufacturing

    • Industrial piping systems

  • Experience with welding processes such as GMAW, GTAW, SMAW, and SAW.

  • Familiarity with welding metallurgy and weld defect analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in chiller, HVAC, or refrigeration equipment manufacturing.

  • Knowledge of refrigerant pressure systems and related piping requirements.

  • Experience supporting ASME U-Stamp or similar code-certified manufacturing facilities.

Key Competencies

  • Strong technical expertise in welding processes and metallurgy

  • Knowledge of pressure vessel and heat exchanger manufacturing

  • Problem solving and root cause analysis

  • Collaboration with cross-functional teams

  • Attention to detail and regulatory compliance

  • Continuous improvement mindset
