Description The Certified Anesthesia Provider is a highly skilled non-physician anesthesia clinician who works within the Anesthesia Care Team model as described by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). The Certified Anesthesia Provider role may be fulfilled by either a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) or a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant (CAA), both of whom will work under the direction of licensed physician anesthesiologists to implement anesthesia care plans. They are trained extensively in the delivery and maintenance of quality anesthesia care as well as advanced patient monitoring techniques.
Qualifications

Minimum Education
Master's Degree in Anesthesia in a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Program Anesthesiologist Assistant (Required) Or
Master's Degree Graduates prior to 2025, must have completed a master's degree approved nurse anesthesia program, which includes 24-36 months of course work and a minimum of 800 hours of clinical experience (Required) Or Graduates in 2025 and post, must complete a doctorate of nursing anesthesia practice (DNAP) degree

Minimum Work Experience
1 year One year of work related experience in pediatric care. (Preferred)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Must know how to pretest and calibrate anesthesia equipment, monitors and delivery systems.
Collect preoperative data and perform physical examinations.
Insert venous, arterial, and other invasive catheters.
Deliver drugs for induction and maintenance of anesthesia.
Place, deliver, and manage regional anesthesia.
Secure and manage the airway.
Manage supportive therapy such as intravenous fluids and blood products.
Administer cardiovascular drugs as supportive therapy.
Make anesthetic adjustments using intraoperative monitoring modalities.
Provide a safe transition from the operating room to the recovery area.
Perform functions in post operative pain assessment and management.
Participate in administrative affairs, research, and clinical instruction.
Must be current with CME credits.

Required Licenses and Certifications
Anesthesiologist Assistant DC Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant Upon Hire (Required) Or
Registered Nurse Upon Hire (Required) And
Registered Nurse Anesthetist Upon Hire (Required)Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Upon Hire (Required) And
Anesthesiologist Assistants must have passed the Certifying Examination for Anesthesiologist Assistants
(administered by NCCAA in collaboration with the National Board of Medical Examiners) and maintain current and active certification.
Upon Hire (Required) Or
Nurse Anesthetists must have passed a national certification examination given by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists. (Required)

Functional Accountabilities
Clinical Skills

  • Evaluate and use literature and research findings to support practice decisions.
  • Design, conduct, and/or participate in research studies.
