Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Business Officer position has responsibility for the daily operations of fiscal, human resources, and administrative functions of the Center for Marine Sciences, including programs across Myrtle Grove campus and at Wrightsville Beach. This position provides financial management of state appropriations, contracts and grants, receipt generated resources, endowments, and other various funds. They serve as a subject matter expert and resource to the faculty and staff within CMS and regularly work to problem solve with offices outside of CMS (such as HR and SPARC). The Business Officer will work with administrative and professional staff to interpret and modify policies and procedures to facilitate and ensure the application of sound business practices.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in Business Administration, Public Administration or related business area and two years of administration management or business management experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Experience working with large and complex budgets.
  • Masters degree in Business Administration or related field.
  • University fiscal management and grants management experience.
  • Work experience with core science disciplines such as biology, marine biology, chemistry.
  • Experience with Banner Ellucian.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The University of North Carolina Wilmington's Center for Marine Science ( CMS) is recognized both nationally and internationally for conducting research that contributes to the understanding of environmental processes and problems. Through research, education and outreach, the Center strives to increase knowledge and cultivate public awareness about coastal and marine sciences. This includes a variety of fields such as physical oceanography; marine and coastal biology; marine, atmospheric and natural products chemistry; marine geology; aquaculture; and environmental sciences. Currently there are more than 100 active research programs supported by CMS and over 140 scientists, staff and students broadly associated with the unit. The teaching and research facility located on the Intracoastal Waterway in southeastern North Carolina features state of the art core facilities in spectrometry and spectroscopy, light stable isotopes, biotechnology, aquaculture, DNA and water quality analysis as well as running seawater systems, a coastal workboat fleet and a wide range of oceanographic equipment that are available to all CMS researchers. The Center supports educational programs related to marine science, including the MS Marine Science degree as well as courses and students from various marine-science related academic departments. It also supports several outreach entities, including NC Sea Grant, the NC National Estuarine Research Reserve; Marine Quest, among others.
