Overview

In tandem with the Hospital's Business Plan, Performance Improvement Process, and under the supervision of a registered dietitian, demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to manage the nutrition care of patients throughout the lifecycle in an inpatient setting. Ensures that optimal nutrition is provided to patients based on medical, cultural and age specific needs. Uses knowledge of growth and development, the medical sciences, psychology and socio-economic factors, as they apply to clinical dietetics in an inpatient setting. Under the supervision of a registered dietitian, evaluates patients on oral diets for nutritional risk and facilitates the implementation of age and culturally appropriate, evidence based nutrition care plans and behavioral changes to promote sound dietary choices in health and disease. Translates the science of nutrition and the study of food into practical applications as an adjunct medical therapy. Orients Dietetic Interns as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Patient Nutrition Care; performed under the supervision of a registered dietitian:
    • 1.1 Demonstrates competency in providing age and culturally appropriate medical nutrition therapy specific to assigned patient populations, as evidenced by PI monitors.
  • 2. Service Management
    • 2.1 Demonstrates effective organizational skills and uses understanding of YNHH performance standards to ensure the smooth and timely delivery of clinical nutrition and counseling services on assigned patient care units.
  • 3. Professional Development
    • 3.1 Maintains registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

AS degree from an accredited college or university with successful completion of an accredited American Dietetic Association dietetic technician program required.

EXPERIENCE

A minimum of four (4) to seven (7) years practical experience as a dietetic technician required. Practical experience in an acute care facility preferred., Registered dietetic technicianCommission on Dietetic Registration

SPECIAL SKILLS

Excellent oral and written communications skills required. Must have a demonstrated ability to review medical records and use the information to implement a nutrition plan of care. Must be able to disseminate nutritional information to other health professionals, as well as translate into laymen's terms for purposes of patient education. Must be able to work well both independently and in collaboration with the registered dietitian to prioritize patient care. Must be able to interact well with all members of the health care team. Must have working knowledge of evidenced-based principles of medical nutrition therapy and the Nutrition Care Process. Must be able to use common computer software systems such as word processing, spreadsheets, order-entry programs and electronic medical records. Experience w/ nutrient analysis programs and the internet preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

must be able to sit and stand for significant lengths of time in completion of work tasks. Must be able to walk significant distances to provide coverage on geographically diverse hospital inpatient units or clinics.
