The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), in partnership with the Centre County Maintenance Organization, is seeking a motivated individual to join our team as a full-time CDL Equipment Operator Trainee. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an Equipment Operator Trainee with PennDOT, you will play a vital role in keeping Pennsylvania's roadways safe, reliable, and well-maintained. From supporting winter operations to assisting with year-round construction and maintenance projects, your work will directly benefit the traveling public and the communities we serve. This position offers hands-on experience, strong teamwork, and the satisfaction of knowing your efforts make a meaningful impact every day.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support winter operations by operating snowplows and related equipment to maintain safe travel during severe weather.
  • Assist with construction and maintenance projects that enhance roadway and bridge infrastructure throughout the county.
  • Perform physical labor to support daily operations and contribute to a productive, team-oriented work environment.
  • Operate heavy equipment and trucks under supervision while developing the skills required for full-time operator duties.
  • Complete minor repairs and routine preventative maintenance on assigned equipment to ensure safe, efficient operation.
  • Maintain accurate daily logs and reports documenting equipment use, maintenance activities, and operational needs.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
    • Dual shifts, overtime, and travel may be required.
  • Work schedule is subject to change due to weather or seasonal requirements.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $41,526.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
  • This position requires possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit on the first day of work.
  • This position requires possession of a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of work.
  • This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.

Additional Requirement:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
