Minimum Experience/Education

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Seven (7) or more years of progressively responsible electrical trade experience.
Three (3) or more years of supervisory or lead electrician experience.

Knowledge

  • Advanced knowledge of complex electrical, electronic, and low-voltage systems in institutional environments
  • Advanced knowledge of fire alarm and life-safety systems under the North Carolina Fire Code and NFPA 72
  • Working knowledge of DDC / building automation systems and system integration
  • Knowledge of fiber-optic systems, termination methods, and testing principles
  • Knowledge of NEC (NFPA 70), NFPA 72, OSHA regulations, and University safety policies


Skills

  • Advanced troubleshooting of multi-system electrical and life-safety failures

Position Overview




Primary Purpose of Position
The Electrical Supervisor is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising electrical work activities to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards.

This role provides leadership to electricians and apprentices while maintaining productivity, quality workmanship, and a strong safety culture.

The Electrical Supervisor (Advanced) plans, directs, and supervises complex electrical, electronic, and life-safety system operations across campus facilities.

This advanced-level position exercises independent judgment serves as a technical authority and ensures regulatory compliance for mission-critical infrastructure in an occupied university environment.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Physical Plant is responsible for providing services relative to building and grounds maintenance, utilities, transportation, trash removal, central receiving, recycling, disposition of surplus property and moving and hauling. In addition, the Physical Plant has expanding responsibilities that includes providing support services for the instruction and research programs to achieve the University's mission, goals and objectives. Maintains and improves and expands all campus buildings, campus image and education opportunities for all people. More specifically, the functions involve energy conservation, building renovation/repair, occupational safety and health, landscape design, event planning, vehicle and equipment maintenance/repair, motor pool and housekeeping services to 40 academic buildings, 15 residence halls and 19 farm buildings (15 research and 21 support facilities). Moreover, the Skilled Trades Department is responsible for operation, repair, maintenance and preventive maintenance of campus facilities.
Work Hours 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Works overtime and weekends on short notice for special events and emergency repairs. Rotates working on call and call backs.
Is this position eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies. On-site (Employees are primarily in the office and/or have a critical job requirement that requires dedicated office space on-site)
Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies


Required Competency Knowledge - Technical (Mechanical)
Duties

  • Serves as the University's technical authority for complex electrical, electronic, and life-safety systems
  • Provides expert guidance and final technical decisions for Facilities Operations
  • Oversees advanced work involving power distribution, emergency power, direct digital control (DDC) systems, fire alarm and life-safety systems, security systems, and fiber-optic infrastructure
  • Diagnoses and resolves highly complex system failures affecting academic, research, residential, and mission-critical facilities



Required Competency Safety and Health Compliance
Duties

  • Acts as Facilities' primary compliance lead for fire alarm and life-safety systems
  • Ensures compliance with the North Carolina Fire Code, NFPA 72, NEC (NFPA 70), OSHA, and University policies
  • Directs NFPA 72 inspection, testing, maintenance (ITM), impairments, documentation, and acceptance testing
  • Coordinates directly with Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), Campus Police, and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ)
  • Establishes and enforces advanced safety practices, including lockout/tagout, arc-flash mitigation, energized-work controls, and life-safety system impairment procedures
  • Leads campus response to electrical and life-safety emergencies, outages, and system restorations
  • Evaluates risks and implements controls to protect occupants, infrastructure, and institutional operations

  • Plans, assigns, and supervises licensed electricians, apprentices, and contractors
  • Provides advanced technical mentoring, training, and performance evaluation
  • Ensures workforce readiness for complex, high-risk electrical and life-safety tasks

Duties

  • Oversees and approves contractor work for electrical, fire alarm, DDC, and fiber-optic projects
  • Reviews test results, documentation, and as-built drawings prior to system acceptance
  • Ensures contractor compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory requirements
  • Provides technical input and recommendations for capital projects and renovations
  • Supports infrastructure investment decisions impacting campus reliability and life safety



Required Competency Planning and Organizing Operations
Duties

  • Directs preventive maintenance programs for electrical and life-safety systems
  • Leads long-range planning for system upgrades, modernization, and energy-efficiency initiatives
  • Coordinates planned outages to minimize disruption to campus operations
  • Maintains authoritative records for inspections, testing, deficiencies, impairments, corrective actions, and system history
  • Utilizes the CMMS to ensure traceability and compliance
  • Represents Facilities Operations during audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews
