Job Summary The Business Intelligence Data Engineer will support enterprise reporting and analytics for a large academic medical school. This role will focus on designing, building, and maintaining scalable data infrastructure to support operational and strategic decision-making across clinical, research, and administrative domains. This role will focus on the design, migration, and implementation of modern data pipelines and data models in Microsoft Fabric, supporting the organization's transition from on-premises systems to a cloud-based analytics platform. An additional portion of this role will involve traditional relational database development and administration within an on-premises SQL Server environment. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience participating in data platform migrations to cloud environments, particularly Microsoft Fabric, and will play a key role in designing new cloud-native data architecture while modernizing existing SQL-based ETL processes. The candidate should be proactive, detail oriented, and comfortable working in fast-paced, data-intensive environments. Key Responsibilities Cloud Development and Data Platform Migration
- Hands-on experience implementing Microsoft Fabric solutions
- Participate in the design and execution of the organization's migration of existing data warehouse assets from on-premises SQL Server to Microsoft Fabric.
- Translate existing fact and dimension models from traditional relational data warehouse structures into Fabric Lakehouse or Warehouse architectures.
- Design and implement data pipelines using Microsoft Fabric Data Factory / Data Pipelines.
- Build and maintain Fabric Lakehouse, Warehouse, and Delta tables to support enterprise analytics workloads.
- Develop data transformation logic using Fabric notebooks, SQL endpoints, or pipelines.
- Implement incremental data loading strategies and optimize data ingestion processes.
- Participate in architectural decisions related to data storage, transformation, governance, and performance optimization in Fabric.
- Implement best practices for cloud data engineering, including monitoring, logging, and cost-efficient data pipeline design.
- Collaborate with BI developers and analysts to ensure data structures support enterprise reporting needs.
- Document migration approaches, architecture decisions, and operational procedures.
SQL Development and Data Warehouse Support, Database Administration
- Create and maintain database objects (tables, views, stored procedures, triggers, functions).
- Maintain existing ETL processes using SQL, T-SQL
- Optimize query performance and troubleshoot data issues in relational databases.
- Assist with database design, indexing strategies, and performance tuning.
- Enhance/maintain SSIS packages or equivalent ETL workflows when required.
- Maintain on-premises SQL Server environment including space management and security.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in data engineering or database development.
- Hands-on implementation experience with Microsoft Fabric including Lakehouse, Warehouse, OneLake, Dataflows Gen2, and Pipelines, Delta/Parquet storage formats.
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing lakehouses/warehouses using Delta tables and medallion (Bronze/Silver/Gold) architecture.
- Experience in SQL development, including T-SQL, Stored procedures, query optimization.
- Experience working with large analytical datasets supporting reporting or business intelligence.
- Expertise with administrating on-premises SQL Server environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience migrating on-premises data warehouses to cloud platforms.
- Experience integrating Fabric data models with Power BI semantic models and dashboards.
- Experience implementing data governance, data lineage, and monitoring within Fabric.
- Experience with SSIS or other ETL orchestration tools.
- Experience with Spark, Python, or distributed compute frameworks.
