Learn more about the UC Office of the President DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW UCOP Budget Analysis & Planning ("BAP"), a department within UC Finance ("CFO"), manages the University of California's systemwide annual budget, long-range financial planning, and state budget requests. BAP analyzes complex financial factors, coordinates with campuses, and aligns systemwide priorities. Key roles include operating budget development, financial forecasting, and policy development.
The Summer Associate Intern will be responsible for supporting the BAP Financial Planning & Analysis ("FP&A") team to help tell stories about the University of California's impact and advocate for its needs over the next few years. In particular, the intern will help compile and analyze data into useful 10-20 year longitudinal analyses, i.e. visualizations or dashboards, that show significant 'actionable' trends over time and by campus. This internship is both onsite in Oakland, CA (2 days), and remote. Key Responsibilities50% - Develop 10 to 20-year longitudinal visualizations and/or dashboard(s) Gather, clean, and map 3-5 years of data from various sources to develop a 'proof of concept' for analysis, validate data with other sources, and present findings. Analyze trends, perform benchmarking across campuses, including other public or private universities, to identify notable patterns and key metrics, and perform research to contextualize or corroborate potential findings. Expand analysis to include more years, other data sources (see 'data pipeline' below), and performance ratios, to develop a more complete 10 to 20-year view of trends across UC campuses. Create final presentation, documentation of sources and methods, and reporting materials to share with internal and external stakeholders. 25% - Explore the use of AI and other analytical software to develop tools and other unique ways of presenting, and sharing data (beyond PowerPoint and pdf) Experiment with AI-powered interactive storytelling, and develop automated real-time dashboards that can be shared with campus leadership and budget and planning staff, and recommend 1-2 solutions for BAP to consider using. 15% - Support BAP development of a 'data pipeline' Develop inventory of usable data sources that BAP can use for future narratives, and design a SQL database to automate consolidation, cleansing, and reporting workflows. 10% - Cross Functional Provide generalist support for BAP and FP&A functions, with the ability to intersect across multiple workflows and deliver flexible, ad-hoc support when needed Required QualificationsCurrently enrolled University of California Student Working knowledge of SQL, python, R, excel, Tableau Ability to depict complex data in simple manner to lay audience to tell 'actionable' stories with data Strong critical thinking, data skepticism, creative problem-solving, and bias towards big picture impacts. Applied curiosity (burning desire to know things) Strong support for public higher education Learning & DevelopmentThis internship provides exposure to UC financial systems, fund management practices, and stewardship responsibilities. The selected student will receive ongoing supervision, mentoring, and feedback throughout the appointment. Duration: June-August 2026 (specific dates flexible) Schedule: Full time (40 hours per week) Location: This internship is both onsite in Oakland, CA (2 days) and remote.
