Position Description

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) is seeking an experienced and skilled Manager of Carpentry and Painting to lead and support construction, renovation, and maintenance efforts across our campus. This role is ideal for a hands-on professional with strong leadership abilities and a deep background in carpentry, painting, and facilities operations.

You will oversee daily operations, supervise skilled trades staff, and collaborate closely with Laboratory leadership and scientific teams to maintain and enhance a world-class research environment.


Position Responsibilities

  • Designs, lays out, constructs, modifies, and maintains buildings.
  • Works with wood, wood products, plastics, and other materials common to the construction industry.
  • Uses hand, portable, and fixed tools common to the building and cabinetmaking industries.
  • Works from prints, sketches, and verbal instructions.
  • Performs complex construction tasks requiring a high degree of technical skill and experience.
  • Supervises and directs carpentry and painting staff in the performance of their duties.
  • Enforcement of safety including wearing proper PPE for the department
  • Orders necessary supplies, equipment, and services from approved vendors.
  • Interacts with Laboratory management and scientific staff to determine construction and maintenance needs for Laboratory buildings.
  • Manages carpentry and painting operational budgets

Position Requirements

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

Experience:

  • Minimum of 15 years of carpentry experience
  • Proven experience in a supervisory or leadership role preferred

Skills:

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and technical drawings
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, tools, and safety practices
