Department Overview

The Underwriting Department plays an integral role in supporting the financial "bottom line" for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. Its role is to establish appropriate premium rates and administrative fee levels for all customers based on the benefit levels selected. This is achieved through sound pricing, rating techniques, and trend analysis. Underwriting works closely with the Marketing Department to support sales efforts and to recommend benefit options that maintain financial viability for the customer. Underwriting also ensures timely and accurate groups setup and maintenance as well as providing reporting and other data.

Primary Responsibilities

The Group Analyst position is responsible for assessing the quality of risk and providing financial quotes for new business experience rated local underwritten accounts. The position provides complete renewal analysis on existing local underwritten accounts. In addition, the Group Analyst supports customers by providing alternate benefit quotes, preparing ERISA reports, and completing ad hoc and other special reports.

Summary of Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree (preferably in a quantitative discipline such as Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Accounting, or Finance)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Experience in a position demonstrating a high attention to detail
  • Experience using tools such as GEMS, Access, Excel, and XLogic
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills
  • Willingness to work with both internal and external staff
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing data
  • Recent graduate within the last twelve months is a plus
Work Location

The work schedule for this position will be hybrid (onsite/remote). Business areas reserve the right to require associates to return to the office as needed, based on performance or other business considerations. A hybrid work schedule is subject to amendment or termination at any time by the Company.
