Job Summary

The Director of Nurse Midwifery provides 24/7 executive leadership for midwifery services, including strategic, clinical, and operational oversight of the obstetrical emergency department, inpatient, virtual and ambulatory midwifery services. This individual ensures high-quality, patient-centered care in alignment with institutional goals, while supporting staff development, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance. The Director serves as a clinical executive, administrative supervisor, and will be accountable for performance across quality, safety, patient experience, workforce engagement, and financial stewardship. The division includes high-acuity maternal care, serving a medically and socially complex patient population, and operates within a major academic environment. Strong physician partnership, operation discipline, team building, and visible leadership presence is essential for success. The Director of Nurse Midwifery is expected to bring subject matter expertise in midwifery care while also leading a transformative and culturally competent team. The role reports to the Senior Vice President and Chief of Labor & Delivery and partners closely with chiefs of service to align nursing, medical and operational priorities.

The Director will also provide direct patient care as a Certified Nurse Midwife. The role of Certified Nurse Midwife includes direct patient/family care, resident/ midwifery education, consultation, patients/ families/ group and community advocacy to holistic care for complex patient care needs. This role will practice autonomously and in collaboration with other health care professionals to treat and manage obstetrical and gynecological conditions. This role serves as a member of the care team with the primary responsibility of managing women health patients who seek care in the Ambulatory Clinic, Obstetrical Emergency Department, Family Birth Center, and Mother Baby units under the supervision of the supervising attending. Certified Nurse Midwife will provide care to women during normal pregnancies and deliveries and calls on obstetricians or other physicians if complications develop.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administrative: 33% Clinical: 66%

1. Lead and manage the midwifery department, overseeing hiring, onboarding, scheduling, payroll and performance evaluations.

2. Collaborate with nursing, obstetric, and hospital leadership to develop and implement policies, procedures, and care models

3. Manage staffing models to align with patient volume, acuity, and institutional goals

4. Support Grady Health Systems operations and clinical improvement initiatives

5. Assure that a robust midwifery performance improvement program (including OPPE/FPPE and Quality Assurance/ Performance Improvement and Morbidity and Mortality is operative within the clinical service

6. Participate in Grady Initiatives such as Women's and Infant Council, lead work groups, representing all midwives

7. Provide oversight and share best practices as a subject matter expert amongst the clinical team

8. Chair the Certified Nurse Midwifery Operations Committee

EXPERIENCE

  • Five years' experience as a Certified Nurse Midwife
  • Completion of nurse midwifery program accredited by the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM).

  • Licensed by the Georgia Composite Medical Board
  • Masters of Science in Nurse Midwifery
  • Registered Nurse in State of Georgia
  • Previous experience leading the coordination of midwifery services team
  • Expertise in developing clinical driven protocols, guidelines, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Executive presence with the ability to lead complex teams in high-stakes clinical environments
  • Skilled change leader able to elevate performance and coach to excellence
  • Previous preceptorship of students, residents and junior midwives
  • Experience in leading or participating in interdisciplinary committees related to maternal child health.
  • Passion for improving health outcomes and serving vulnerable populations

PREFERRED

  • Previous experience as a labor and delivery registered nurse
  • At least 2 years' experience leading the coordination of midwifery services team
  • Previous clinical experience in a safety-net hospital
