Environmental Data Management Student Assistant

The Earth and Environmental Sciences Area at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has an exciting data management opportunity for a student assistant involving data generated and managed by large DOE-funded projects. The DOE's Environmental Systems Science Data Infrastructure for a Virtual Ecosystem (ESS-DIVE) is a data archive for Earth and environmental science data (http://ess-dive.lbl.gov/). The DOE's Watershed Function Scientific Focus Area (http://watershed.lbl.gov/) investigate hydrological perturbations to mountainous watersheds, and their impacts to downstream water quantity and quality. These projects generate and manage diverse datasets from various environmental sciences that include hydrology, geology, ecology, geochemistry, biology, climate and geophysics.

The successful applicant will join the interdisciplinary data teams of these projects, which consist of earth/environmental scientists, and computer/data scientists. The student will be involved in various data management activities including curation and archival, data standardization, and development of tools and workflows to improve the access and usability of the datasets. The position is open immediately. Successful performance during the Summer may lead to continuation of the role in the Fall.

You will:

• Work with scientists at LBNL and partner institutions to organize and submit metadata and data following Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) principles.

• Assist with metadata and data curation by performing basic quality checks to ensure metadata and related information are complete and project data standards are adhered to.

• Coordinate public release of datasets by working with relevant investigators, managing the publication workflow, and engaging with DOE's Office of Science, Technology, and Information (OSTI).

• Provide assistance to researchers and others in gaining access to the data and information made accessible, and answer user support questions.

• Participate in community engagement activities, such as website updates, newsletters, and outreach.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

• Provide feedback on and refine technical user documentation.

• Manage repository users and keep archive metadata consistent with field collection activities.

• Help prepare data package statistics and user stories for project leadership and DOE's Office of Science.

We are looking for:

• Undergraduate student currently working towards a Bachelor's degree in Earth/Environmental sciences

• Prior experience in data management practices is highly desirable

• Programming experience (Python) is highly desirable. The candidate should at least be willing to learn scripting skills for enhancement of data management processes.

• Interest in using AI tools for data management and user support

• Good communication and organization skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in an interdisciplinary, collaborative team environment is required.

Additional information:

• Appointment type: This is a full-time, student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

• Salary range: The expected hourly range for this position is $19.18 - $25.18.
