Job Summary: (includes but is not limited to the following, other duties may be assigned):
Operates and maintains peaking station units and auxiliary equipment: including diesels, gas turbines, electrical equipment, instrumentation, distributed Control System (DCS), transformers, generators, pumps and motors. Takes personal responsibility to incorporate safe behavior into all activities and consistently complies with all established safety and environmental policies and procedures.
Job Responsibilities:
* The Senior Southern Peaking Technician (SSPT) will perform all work required on the generating units and facilities. SSPT will be required to troubleshoot and work alone, as necessary, at any generator location. SSPT duties will include the operation and maintenance of generating units (Turbines & Diesels) and lead a crew of workers and contractors.
* In addition to maintenance and operation, the SSPT will perform combustion turbine related duties and be accountable for overseeing and reporting all work activities at any Combustion Turbine location which he/she is assigned. SSPT duties will include but not be limited to reporting fuel levels and consumptions, keeping certain records (like performance, maintenance etc.) conducting and reporting tests.
* As a SSPT the job description includes coordinating and directing the work of other people. These people can be other Local 1238 employees, contractors and/or their employees, or Calpine employees from other locations and/or departments. The SSPT must have strong leadership skills, the ability to work well with others, be able to give clear written and verbal direction, and to work well and maintain control while in a stressful situation.
* Perform any work required for the maintenance, testing and operation of peaking units to maintain continuity of service consistent with safe, environmentally compliant, economical and reliable practices.
* Be able to work with Computer Control System, be able to diagnose software and hardware faults and implement corrective actions.
* Perform corrective and preventive maintenance activities, including troubleshooting of electrical
* systems, controls, and mechanical equipment.
* Maintains written and computer-based logs, records, workorders, monthly reports, fuel inventories, as necessary. Performs or assists in the recording and computation of all performance tests. Reports faulty or malfunctioning equipment to designated manager.
* Receive, unload and correctly store parts and supplies in the plant.
* Will work overtime in this job classification, as required.
* Assist in developing plant operation and maintenance procedures. Implement plant improvements and modifications as assigned
* Perform housekeeping tasks to maintain a clean safe work environment and professional appearance.
* Will perform related or less-skilled work, as required, or directed.
* Completes tasks and resolves problems that require an ability to recognize deviation from accepted practices.
* With limited guidance, prioritizes and executes responsibilities effectively for a single trade, group of related tasks or functional area.
* Performs a variety of technical service/support duties that are semi-routine in nature. Routine and non-routine decisions with some latitude, but still subject to approval.
* Prioritizes daily activities to complete tasks/projects.
* May assist with orienting and training employees in moderately complex to complex areas.
* Perform other tasks as directed by the Maintenance Manager and or other supervisory personnel as directed and required.
Job Requirements:
* High School Diploma, degree from technical/vocational school or equivalent journey-level; 2-5 years' experience in instrument, electrical, control system and mechanical equipment.
* Strong mechanical aptitude with an advanced understanding of chemistry, physics, electricity, and mathematics.
* Must be able to pass qualification tests prior to the Company awarding the position.
* Must be able to walk, stoop, stand, climb, crawl, lift, reach without restriction. Cannot be color blind.
* Experience with DCS programming and configuration
* Basic certifications/licensures. Valid state driver's license.
