Position Description The Manager, Enterprise Technology is a technical leader and people manager responsible for a team of engineers who design, build, and operate the cloud and infrastructure platforms underpinning UNOS's mission-critical systems. The ideal candidate contributes directly to platform engineering work, mentors engineers, and upholds engineering quality standards across the team. This role drives a cloud-first, engineering-driven approach to platform delivery, where automation and operational excellence are the default. These platforms underpin the national organ transplant system, where reliability and availability directly impact patient outcomes. This role adapts priorities to meet evolving operational and delivery demands and integrates industry best practices in cloud engineering and automation to advance departmental objectives.
Department Scope The Enterprise Technology department is responsible for the platforms, services, and engineering practices that enable UNOS to deliver its mission:
- Cloud, hybrid, and multi-cloud infrastructure platforms spanning Azure and on-premises environments, including Nutanix workload infrastructure.
- Microsoft identity platform and Entra ID as foundational services for the enterprise.
- Underlying corporate service platforms, including Microsoft 365 and telecom infrastructure, operated in shared responsibility with the teams that administer and consume those services.
- Container platforms and workflows including Docker, Kubernetes, Azure Container Apps, and container registries.
- Observability, reliability, incident management, and disaster recovery capabilities for life-critical national transplant systems.
- Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD, scripting, and automation tooling that replace manual processes and enable self-service delivery for engineering functions across UNOS, including software engineering, quality engineering, data analytics, research, and AI/ML workloads.
- Technical security controls and compliance with HIPAA, NIST-based frameworks, and federal contract obligations.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership
- Lead the team in delivering across the department scope, providing technical direction, exercising sound technical judgment, and contributing directly to engineering work where it has the greatest impact.
- Cultivate an engineering-driven culture where infrastructure, platforms, and operations are built and managed through code, with engineers who are fluent in Infrastructure-as-Code, scripting, pipeline development, and automation.
- Apply working proficiency with Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD, scripting, and automation tooling to evaluate team work, unblock engineers, and advance platform capabilities: Terraform, Bicep, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, PowerShell, Bash, YAML.
- Execute within enterprise architecture standards, reference architectures, and technical guardrails, contributing input on platform strategy and evaluating emerging technologies for applicability within the team's scope.
Platform Delivery
- Support ongoing cloud transformation by operating Nutanix workload infrastructure alongside cloud platforms, ensuring continuity, workload portability, and consistent management across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
- Own the Microsoft identity platform and Entra ID as foundational services, and partner with other teams on the shared underlying corporate service platforms that depend on them.
- Direct the team in building and maintaining observability capabilities including monitoring, alerting, logging, and tracing across platform environments.
- Build self-service platform capabilities that enable engineering functions across UNOS, including software engineering, quality engineering, data analytics, research, and AI/ML workloads, to provision, deploy, and operate resources in development and test environments with minimal dependency on Enterprise Technology.
Team Development & Performance
- Manage and develop a team of platform and infrastructure engineers, providing technical guidance and coaching grounded in direct engineering experience.
- Build and sustain an engineering-first team culture, raising technical depth across the team in areas such as coding, automation, and platform engineering.
- Conduct performance management with clear expectations, ongoing feedback, and directness when addressing issues.
- Recruit, develop, and retain engineering talent with the coding, automation, and cloud engineering skills required to deliver platforms through code.
Operational & Financial Accountability
- Manage and report against infrastructure SLOs and SLAs, and lead resolution of platform incidents including participation in on-call rotations and providing operational support.
- Ensure disaster recovery, business continuity, and vulnerability remediation capabilities are maintained and regularly validated.
- Partner with Information Security and GRC teams on compliance assessments, audits, and technical remediation, providing engineering leadership to drive resolution and ensuring platforms are maintained in a continuous state of audit readiness.
- Manage technology vendor relationships, ensuring service levels and contractual obligations are met, and partner with procurement and finance on budget tracking, cloud spend optimization, license management, and capacity planning.
Minimum Requirements
- 5+ years of progressive experience in infrastructure engineering, cloud operations, platform engineering, or related technical disciplines.
- 2+ years of people management experience leading technical teams; 5+ years preferred.
Critical Skills
- Working knowledge of Azure cloud services including compute, networking, identity, storage, and platform operations.
- Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code practices using tools such as Terraform, Bicep, or equivalent.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as PowerShell or Bash for automation and operational tooling.
- Strong understanding of reliability practices including monitoring, observability, incident management, and SLO-based operations.
- Experience operating environments subject to regulatory or compliance requirements (HIPAA, NIST, federal contracts).
- Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills, with demonstrated ability to guide, influence, and partner effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders including Security, GRC, Engineering, and Data teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience supporting hybrid infrastructure environments during cloud migration programs.
- Familiarity with Agile/Scrum or Kanban delivery practices.
- Keen interest in emerging platform engineering practices, cloud-native technologies, and automation trends.
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) certification required.
- Microsoft Azure Administrator (AZ-104) or Microsoft Azure DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400) certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
- General office demands
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Frequent reaching, handling, and fine manipulation for using office equipment, filing, and managing paperwork.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, mouse, and other office tools.
- Occasional standing, walking, and bending.
- Ability to lift up to 10-20 pounds occasionally.
- Vision abilities required include close vision for computer work and reading documents.
- Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
