Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Admissions Evaluation & Policy, the Associate Director of First-Year Evaluation leads the development and implementation of UC Davis's first-year admission process, including training, the holistic review process, and verification and finalization of admission offers. The associate director provides direct supervision for a team of three employees, 90-100 seasonal readers, and leads the work of more than 35 admissions team members each year. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, federal, state, university and local admission policy, resource management, etc.), and is the lead for all aspects of first-year admission to the UC Davis campus. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives. Works with the Director of Operations and IT leads, ensuring technical resources are enhanced as needed prior to the coming admission cycle. The associate director also maintains a recruitment territory as needed in consultation with the Director of Recruitment.

This role is based on the university campus in Davis, CA. The selected candidate is expected to be on campus regularly, though the Undergraduate Admissions team works primarily in a hybrid environment.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in an undergraduate admission setting as it pertains to leading the review of applications.
  • In-depth knowledge of admissions policies and procedures and experience in interpreting and applying complex guidelines to render admission related decisions across a wide range of unique academic and life circumstances in a multi-functional highly fluctuating environment.
  • Demonstrated ability in supervising the work of others and the ability to organize and set priorities that accurately reflect department goals and objectives; independently organize, prioritize work; manage time effectively to meet goals, deadlines, and oversee multiple, conflicting, projects; and maintain a high level of productivity and client service.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written to prepare a variety of proposals, correspondence, reports, operating procedures, agreements, performance evaluations, training documents, and to deliver presentations and training programs.
  • Skills to develop innovative solutions and programs, manage difficult and unfamiliar projects, and respond with flexibility to requests to problem-solve, to include program development and refinement.
  • Analytical skills to assess program requirements, information or problems in an objective manner and make logical conclusions; to provide a sound basis to establish priorities, take appropriate action or recommend to others, and to resolve conflicts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Travel experience for recruitment and outreach activities in-state and out-of-state.
  • Knowledge of K-12 and higher education systems; familiarity with academic and social problems confronting student from diverse backgrounds in high school and college settings.
  • Familiarity with or ability to learn campus policies, procedures, and practices in the areas of student pre-collegiate programs; knowledge of campus and UC system-wide admissions practices; academic programs, and student services
