Job Summary

Coordinate all aspects of a volunteer program for assigned Corewell Health entity including recruitment, selection, onboarding, placement, compliance/data collection, and utilization of volunteers ensuring that placements are appropriately focused on enhancing the experience of our patients, staff and visitors. Lead hospital orientations and collaborate with departments for smooth volunteer integration. Develop and monitor schedules, resolve conflicts, and ensure coverage. Conduct volunteer rounding to assess satisfaction and address barriers. Support recruitment through outreach, events, and partnerships, while promoting service value and exploring new program opportunities.

Essential Functions
  • Manage volunteer applications and onboarding. Review and respond to incoming volunteer applications in a timely and professional manner. Conduct structured interviews to assess candidate suitability, interests, and alignment with organizational values. Ensure all onboarding requirements are met, including background checks, health screenings, training modules, and documentation compliance. Maintain accurate records of volunteer onboarding progress and follow up as needed to ensure readiness for placement.
  • Facilitate hospital orientation through staff transition. Lead comprehensive hospital orientation sessions to familiarize new volunteers with policies, procedures, safety protocols, and departmental expectations. Coordinate with department heads and volunteer leaders to ensure a seamless handoff and integration into assigned roles. Monitor initial volunteer engagement to confirm successful acclimation and address any early concerns or questions.
  • Coordinate and monitor volunteer schedules. Develop and maintain detailed volunteer schedules across all hospital units, ensuring adequate coverage and alignment with operational needs. Conduct periodic reviews of scheduling data to identify gaps, trends, or areas requiring additional support. Communicate regularly with volunteers and unit leaders to confirm availability, resolve conflicts, and optimize scheduling efficiency.
  • Conduct volunteer rounding and barrier assessment. Routinely engage with volunteers during active shifts to assess satisfaction, role clarity, and any challenges encountered. Document and escalate any identified barriers-such as workflow issues, interpersonal conflicts, or resource limitations-to appropriate stakeholders. Provide coaching, support, or adjustments to improve volunteer experience and retention.
  • Support volunteer recruitment initiatives. Actively participate in recruitment events, community outreach programs, and promotional campaigns to attract new volunteers. Collaborate with marketing and public relations teams to develop materials and messaging that highlight the value of volunteer service. Build relationships with local schools, universities, and civic organizations to expand the volunteer pipeline.
Qualifications

Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years of relevant experience volunteer oversight, health care setting, recruiting, training, coordinating, recognizing volunteers, volunteer & volunteer leader in a health care environment, or demonstrated leadership ability

Preferred

  • Associate's Degree Business, HR, hospitality, customer service, social services, behavioral sciences, or related field
