Software Engineer - Aviation Messaging Systems *Location:* Annapolis, MD (Local candidates only)
*Work Model:* Hybrid - 4 days onsite / 1 day remote *Employment Type:* Contract-to-Hire *Industry:* Aerospace & Defense IMPORTANT NOTE All candidates *must be local to Annapolis, MD*. Candidates not able to work on-site four days per week *will not be considered*. About the Opportunity Do you want to make your mark in the aviation industry? Do you want to help deliver the next generation of products and services that support the transmission of *tens of millions of aviation data messages every day*? As a Software Engineer, you will play a key role in developing and supporting *mission-critical aviation messaging systems* used globally by more than *1,500 aviation customers*, transmitting over *75 million messages daily*. These systems are fundamental to airline operations and the timely movement of passengers worldwide. This is a newly created role on a highly collaborative engineering team. Reliability, performance, and scale are essential, and your work will directly support the uninterrupted movement of the global aviation industry. What You'll Do * Design and develop critical features within *proprietary Java-based enterprise software* responsible for high-volume message processing * Support refactoring and modernization of applications to newer versions of *OpenJDK* * Develop and enhance *enterprise messaging integrations* to manage data in transit at scale * Support the development of *DevSecOps CI/CD pipelines* for automated build, test, and deployment * Collaborate closely with Technical Leads, Architects, and fellow Software Engineers to support current initiatives and future aviation market expansion What You'll Learn * How enterprise applications scale from small customers to industry-leading airlines * How messaging systems connect aviation customers, partners, and global systems * How communication platforms support real-time airline operations * How to collaborate across multiple engineering disciplines in a regulated environment MUST-HAVE REQUIREMENTS (Critical for Consideration) * *Java enterprise development experience* (2+ years) * *Hands-on experience with enterprise messaging technologies*, such as: * Java Message Service (JMS) * IBM MQ Series * RabbitMQ * ActiveMQ * (Messaging experience must be clearly reflected on the resume) * Experience working across the full *Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)* * Strong *verbal communication* and *technical documentation* skills Required Qualifications * Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field with *2+ years of relevant experience* * *OR* an advanced degree with 1+ year of experience * *OR* 7+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree * Experience developing *Java enterprise applications* * Experience designing, developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining production software * Strong written documentation skills Preferred Qualifications (Strong Emphasis Areas) * *Strong Java experience* developing enterprise or large-scale applications * *Hands-on experience with enterprise messaging tools*, including *JMS, IBM MQ Series, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ*, or similar message-oriented middleware platforms * *Experience in Aerospace or Banking environments* (preferred due to regulated, high-reliability systems, but not required) * Experience developing Java applications that integrate with *JMS and messaging COTS solutions* * Familiarity with *OSGi*, including installing and developing bundles * Experience working in an *Agile development environment* * Experience working in *Linux/Unix operating environments* Why This Role Matters This role supports systems where *reliability is not optional*.
