About the Job

Gallery Attendants are stewards of the visitor experience at The Weisman Art Museum. They serve as an enthusiastic, welcoming, and approachable presence throughout the museum as they support wayfinding, access to resources, promote public programs and events, provide general information about the collections and special exhibitions, help keep the art safe from damage, assist in ensuring the safety of museum visitors, and share information that provides the best possible experience at the museum for all audiences. Gallery Attendants receive training to support the experience of visitors of all ages, fostering positive connections between visitors and the museum.

They are the most visible staff presence in the galleries, they provide information and assistance to visitors, and they monitor the galleries in order to protect works of art, people, and the facility. All gallery staff at the Weisman are cross-trained in three visitor-facing areas: visitor welcoming and orientation, in-gallery experience, and safety and security.

Duties:

  • Demonstrate high levels of customer service, remaining professional, personable, and engaging to all museum visitors.
  • Become knowledgeable on the collections, the facilities, our programming and events, and our place within the University of Minnesota community.
  • Act as a communications hub between visitors, gallery guards, staff and event guests by utilizing the phone, computer systems, and radios.
  • Protect the artwork by continuously observing visitors' behavior while circulating in specific areas or galleries, including monitoring for restricted items and touching of art.
  • Follow and enforce WAM's policies and procedures to ensure the safety of museum collections, property, and visitors.
  • Ensure that visitors follow museum policies regarding food or drink in the galleries, photography of artwork, and current guidelines related to COVID-19.
  • Attend all mandatory departmental training.
  • Communicate visitor comments, compliments, and concerns through appropriate channels.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • Ability to represent the museum with a high level of integrity and professionalism, adhere to museum policies and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner
  • Previous experience working in a customer service role.
  • Dependable and comfortable interacting with a variety of people in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Possess a passion for people, art, and museums.
  • Capable of identifying and positively resolving visitor issues on the spot.
  • Ability to work flexible work shifts that includes evenings and weekends.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to stay alert for long periods of time.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and lift 40 lbs with or without accommodations.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.

The Weisman Art Museum / WAM
Housed in a striking stainless steel and brick building designed by architect Frank Gehry, the Weisman Art Museum offers an educational and friendly museum experience. The museum's collection features early 20th century American artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe and Marsden Hartley, as well as a diverse selection of contemporary art. A teaching museum for the University of Minnesota and the community, the Weisman provides a fresh, engaging arts experience through an array of programs and a changing schedule of exhibitions. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $15.25 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
