Vocational Nurses perform a wide variety of patient care activities under the direction of appropriate registered nursing personnel. They perform assigned nursing procedures for the safety, comfort and well-being of patients such as observing, recording and reporting to the appropriate Registered Nurse the physical and mental condition of the patients and changes in condition, e.g., cyanosis and state of consciousness. Nursing procedures include administering drugs, observing and recording reactions; performing prescribed procedures such as enemas, douches, irrigations, hot and cold applications and changing dressings; assisting physicians with examinations and treatments, participating in team conferences, bathing and feeding patients, making beds, helping patients into and out of bed and assisting them in ambulatory activities; and taking of patients' temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration, and recording results on patients' charts. Incumbents collect specimens such as sputum and urine in containers, label, and send them to the laboratory for analysis; carry out aseptic techniques; care for prostheses and/or self-help devices; perform tracheostomy and ostomy care; administer oxygen and initiate resuscitative measures; and perform suctioning and gastric feeding procedures. Incumbents may administer intermuscular or oral medications only on written orders; may hang and monitor I.V.'s according to policy; may maintain accurate and complete records of nursing care; and perform other related duties as required. Under supervision, the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) will perform the majority of duties as outlined above. Ward 86, the HIV/AIDS Clinic at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) campus has been a leader and innovator in field of HIV care since the beginning of the epidemic. Ward 86 is the largest clinic providing primary medical care for people living with HIV for the San Francisco Health Network (SFHN) and also provide preventive services to patients at-risk for HIV infection, including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Ward 86 provides care to approximately 2500 patients living with HIV, with over 24,000 clinical encounters a year. Services are offered through a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach, addressing primary medical and HIV care, urgent care, mental health evaluation and treatment, substance use assessment, treatment and referrals, HIV prevention services, and HIV specialty care needs. Clinical Care:
- Assists with therapeutic and diagnostic treatments, including:
- Conducting patient assessments (vital signs, physical assessments, electrocardiograms, point-of-care testing and specimen collection, etc.).
- Administering medications and other therapeutic regimens as prescribed, in collaboration with the inter-professional team.
- Evaluating patients' responses to treatments, providing nursing care, and coordinating follow-up care with RNs and providers.
- Establish venous access, perform venipuncture and point-of-care testing.

- Performs routine hematology, chemistry, blood cultures, and other clinical tests, including research protocol-specific specimen collection.
- Maintains accuracy in specimen collection and provide instructions to staff/patients on sample collection procedures.
- May assist with access and linkage to care by calling patients with appointment reminders, helping with care linkage from hospital services, tracking patient retention, and tracking and assisting with health care maintenance activities.
- Performs duties specific to ambulatory patients receiving therapeutic injections, including patient assessment, medication administration, and collaboration with providers for follow-up and prescription refills.
- Administers immunizations as part of primary care, ensuring patient assessment, care management, and follow-up in accordance with immunization protocols and medical orders.
- Provides clinical support for Medical Assistants as needed.
- Provides coverage for other LVNs and Medical Assistants as needed
- Provides care for clinic patients accessing all clinical programs at Ward 86 as directed.
- Transports patients and stat labs as needed.
- Performs other clinical duties as assigned.
