THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Chemist 3, you will perform professional and supervisory work analyzing samples for the presence of environmentally significant analytes using specialized equipment and techniques and employing accepted methods in alignment with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Standard Methods, and DEP. You will conduct a full range of supervisory duties to include orienting new employees during initial probationary periods, identifying training objectives and reviewing progress, monitoring all completed assignments, and completing performance reviews.


Another primary focus of your role involves quality assurance (QA) duties such as participating in on-site evaluations,
maintaining records of all required QA studies, evaluating quality control records to identify trends or quality problems, and initiating corrective action plans as required. In addition, you will conduct internal audits of employees' data to ensure both standard operating procedures and published methods are in compliance with method requirements. Within this role, you will be tasked with various analytical responsibilities such as ensuring that analyses are completed within the required time frames, as well as ensuring for the proper operation of analytical instruments and associated software. You will further evaluate raw instrument data to determine the analyte identifications and quantitates results.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 2 days per week upon successful completion of the probationary period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as a Chemist 2 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of professional chemical analytical experience, and a bachelor's degree that includes 30 credits in chemistry or biochemistry; or
  • One year of professional chemical analytical experience, and a graduate degree in chemistry.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
