What You'll Do: Champion Safety. Take an active role at the forefront of the workforce, prioritizing safety for yourself and others to ensure all assigned plants have few accidents and are in total compliance with all Vulcan, OSHA, and DOT policies and procedures. A Construction Safety rep must have strong communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to enforce rules by getting buy-in from employees. Visit Jobsites, Asphalt Plants, and Shops, spending time with employees observing the work and making suggestions and corrections as needed. Frequently checking work zones and traffic control setups. Most importantly, spend time with the crews to build relationships so they will share their needs and keep safety in the loop for upcoming projects and challenges. Conduct Inspections and Audits. Lead and schedule SHE walks. Conduct OSHA and DOT compliance inspections, audits, and accident/incident investigations; develop inspection and audit checklists; participate in management systems audits and plant inspections; Assist the Regions in developing, implementing, and auditing management systems to prevent losses. Track and follow up on findings. Travel. The ability to travel is required. Travel is primarily between sites (Guntersville, Glencoe, and Douglas) and to job site locations throughout the state. (Frequency may vary) Identify Risks. The majority of a safety rep's job is being present on jobsites and facilities, identifying and evaluating risks associated with asphalt plants, job sites, shops, and other construction projects, as well as the transportation and processing of construction materials. Investigate Accidents. Participate in investigations of accidents and near misses and the identification of root causes and corrective actions; accurately maintain a database of injury and safety information. Administer Programs and Training. Assist in developing and administering programs, such as Division and Company Safety and Health Programs and Policies, the Industrial Hygiene/Occupational Health program, Emergency Response Planning, the Continuous Materials Inventory program, Accident Prevention Initiatives, and Regulatory Compliance training. Safety Training & Orientation: Conduct on-site safety training, help with documentation and storage of task training, orientation for new employees, and regular workplan meetings and toolbox talks. Create training based on issues we see in the field. Become familiar with traffic control guidelines and flagging procedures be able to train on the go or in the classroom as needed. Skills You'll Need: Experience. Previous experience in an industrial environment, construction environment, working around mobile equipment, and or training preferred. Operational Knowledge. Knowledge in methods of prevention of incidents, occupational injuries, illnesses, and property loss. Regulation Knowledge. Knowledge of OSHA general industry and construction, and DOT regulations. Training on MUTCD and ATSSA principles to be assigned. Problem-Solving Skills. Must possess excellent hazard recognition skills, working with different partners to address the challenges and problems, ensuring accurate, safe, and efficient solutions. Technology Skills. Must have strong computer skills, including Word, PowerPoint, Access, Excel, and cell phones. Must be able to use various and highly sophisticated computerized equipment. Documentation: Maintain detailed logs of inspections, training records, and incident reports. Go to vehicle accident scenes and document accidents on projects.
