General Job Description:

The Safety Manager is responsible for cultivating a robust safety culture and maintaining complete regulatory compliance. This involves: managing compliance, policy development, implementation, and auditing; overseeing safety programs and support services for safety staff; leading safety personnel, advising management on injury/illness prevention, and facilitating safety communication; and acting as the primary safety contact for employees, management, and customers.

Supervises: Safety Professionals and other support staff.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and coach management and safety staff toward a proactive, positive safety culture that prioritizes injury and illness prevention.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain effective and collaborative safety professionals while ensuring quality control and professional development within the team.
  • Plan and manage schedules, workflow, and workload delegation to provide continuous oversight and guidance to field staff.
  • Perform job site hazard analyses and proactive site walks with supervision and sales staff to identify exposures and recommend timely controls.
  • Manage internal and external safety inspections and audits, ensuring all safety records are accurate.
  • Serve as the technical safety advisor to ensure compliance with all applicable labor laws, OSHA regulations, and industry standards.
  • Provide incident intervention, response support, and technical guidance during safety events.
  • Investigate incidents, analyze trends, and develop comprehensive reports including corrective and preventive actions.
  • Develop, communicate, and execute site-specific safety plans per customer requirements and verify field adherence.
  • Develop and implement strategies to control exposure to hazards and promptly correct unsafe acts or conditions.
  • Build and maintain strong internal and external partnerships with field leaders, clients, subcontractors, and regulatory organizations.
  • Coach partners across all departments (field, shop, office) in safe practices and regulatory compliance.
  • Facilitate safety communication through tailgates, safety stand-downs, and regular employee updates on environmental or societal risks.
  • Schedule, facilitate, and track safety training programs to ensure regulatory compliance and reinforce awareness.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and represent the company in environmental protection matters.
  • Develop and maintain evacuation plans, conduct drills, and ensure compliance with emergency preparedness standards.
  • Coordinate medical care and return-to-work processes while tracking documentation and follow-up in collaboration with Risk Management.
  • Lead or assist in pausing work to address immediate safety concerns and develop necessary mitigation strategies.
  • Attend sales and client meetings to present safety metrics, initiatives, and technical expertise.
  • Assist in the selection and implementation of appropriate safety equipment, signage, and personal protective gear.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through continued education, networking, and participation in industry organizations.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, customers, and members of the public.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by leadership to support business needs.

Position Requirements (Skills, Work Experience, Education, etc.):

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in construction, maintenance, safety, or operations is required. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in related industries, such as mechanical contracting or comparable commercial/industrial construction.
  • Minimum 5 years of Safety management experience.

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited degree program in Occupational Safety and Health, Engineering, or related field of study, OR equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • CHST or CSP Certification required, SMP Certification preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of safety/environmental principles and techniques
  • Knowledgeable of Federal, State, and local Environmental Health & Safety regulations
  • Knowledgeable in construction operations
  • Ability to voice professional opinions and concerns in a tactful, authentic, and approachable manner to field leadership and stakeholders.
  • Ability to identify safety-related exposures and propose corrective actions
  • Demonstrates leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills to build professional relationships
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous growth by seeking out new learning initiatives and championing knowledge-sharing across the organization and with our external stakeholders

  • Ability to move or transport equipment up to 25 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ability to stand, walk, and climb stairs or ladders for extended periods, often over various and uneven terrains.
  • Use of hands and fingers for tasks such as tool use, equipment operation, and typing.
  • Ability to inspect equipment in various positions/confined areas.
  • Must be able to work in varying climate conditions, including heat and cold.
  • Must be able to work safely at heights exceeding 20 feet and within permit-required confined spaces while wearing all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.

Hours:

This is an Exempt position, typically working Monday through Friday. Work hours are generally scheduled to begin and end during work-site hours, with a one-hour meal break and two rest breaks. Flexibility in the exact start and end times, subject to business needs and prior supervisor approval.

Travel: Must be available to travel between multiple sites.
