Job Description
Vision The Assistant Dean of Admissions will apply evidence-based practices in recruitment, selection, and matriculation, collaborating across the School of Medicine to build an innovative, community-based medical school. Description The Assistant Dean of Admissions leads the Admissions Department for the BA/MD, MD, AA, PA, and graduate programs at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. These programs serve students across three UMKC SOM Missouri campuses: Kansas City, Columbia, and St. Joseph. The school is best known for its accelerated six-year BA/MD program, which matriculates 105 students directly from high school each year. Admissions is housed within the Office of Student Affairs, and the Assistant Dean reports to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs. The Assistant Dean is supported by a Manager of Selection, Manager of Recruitment, two staff members, and two student workers. The department works closely with the BA/MD, MD, AA and PA program selection Committees. Duties and Responsibilities Strategic Leadership
- Provide vision, leadership, and direction for admissions and recruitment programs in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and academic departments, executing the core mission of supporting professionals through teaching science, compassion and service in order to meet the health care needs of the state of Missouri.
- Foster a culture of inclusive excellence, during the application, interview, and recruitment processes.
- Partner with Student Affairs, Council on Evaluation, Committee on Progression, and the Council on Curriculum to identify factors affecting student progression and incorporate findings into admissions practices.
- Oversee student recruitment and admission to the various programs within the School of Medicine.
- Oversee the implementation of a strategic plan from the council on selection for the recruitment of students to meet the goals and mission of the UMKC School of Medicine
- Collaborate on public relations and marketing activities to ensure effective and accurate representation of the school in recruiting efforts as well as admissions policies and procedures.
Operational Leadership
- Exercise Administrative and functional supervision and mentorship over all members of the Admissions department
- Assist the Associate Dean of Student Affairs to oversee and administer the Admissions budget
- Oversee the processes for recruitment, application receipt, screening, interviewing, recruitment, and admissions
- Oversee the feedback process to students who have been denied admission to a School of Medicine program.
- Support the Chairs of the Councils on Selection for the BA/MD, MD, PA and AA programs, communicating policy and decisions of the Councils on Selection to the Coordinating Committee and to the Dean of the School of Medicine
- Engage in ongoing planning and continuous quality improvement in recruiting and admission processes that establish short-term and long-term goals, result in measurable outcomes
- Effectively monitor compliance with the ARC-PA, ARC-AA and LCME accreditation standards; track and manage admissions data to inform these admissions strategies.
- Serve on the following committees:
- Coordinating committee
- Alumni Board
- Council on Inclusive Excellence
- Strategic Undergraduate Recruitment Council
- Maintain and develop institutional admissions policies in accordance with appropriate governing organizations, such as the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Liaison Committee for Medical Education, the Physician Assistant Education Association, and the National Association of College Admissions Counseling.
- Be knowledgeable in federal laws pertaining to admissions and holistic admissions processes.
- In collaboration with the Chairs of the Councils on Selection for the BA/MD, MD, PA and AA programs, organize and develop annual educational sessions, or retreat, to review processes and information with the members of the Council on Selection.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of successful policies and procedures in use in higher education as related to student recruitment and admissions.
- Project management and team-building skills, as well as the ability to work cooperatively with all constituencies in a unique environment of multiple programs functioning on 3 campuses.
- Knowledge of student privacy regulations (FERPA) is required.
- A strong work ethic, an approachable leadership style, and a consistent focus on the school's immediate and strategic goals.
- Interpersonal and communication approaches that incorporate tact and diplomacy.
- Willingness to learn all aspects of the school's strategic and collaborative approach to curriculum, research and inclusive excellence.
- Willingness to learn and follow University policies related to recruitment and admissions, as well as relevant programmatic accreditation standards.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in a related field and at least 5 years of experience in admissions with progressive responsibility and leadership.
Anticipated Hiring Range
The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $80,000 - $100,000 annually. Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
