HJF is seeking a Systems Librarian to provide innovative information services to the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) Learning Resource Center (LRC) to innovate, improve, maintain, and manage the technology infrastructure of the LRC, including the LRC's ILS, discovery tool, website, and databases, and minimizing disruptions to LRC subscriptions and resources.

This position will be in support of Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) Learning Resource Center (LRC) in Bethesda, MD.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.


  • Support, configure, and maintain LRC-specific software including the integrated library system (ILS) and discovery system (currently Alma/Primo), interlibrary loan tools (currently ILLiad), proxy services (e.g. EZProxy), and library-specific content management system (e.g. Springshare, LibGuides, LibSuite).
  • Identify and implement processes and systems that improve the LRC's operations, e.g. patron management tools. Provide audits and reports of LRC's users/user groups as required by other USU departments, vendors, and library staff.
  • Conduct patron management activities, including coordinating modifications to patron records tracking new employers, alumni status, coordinated library privileges for various groups of students and authorizing patrons for access to library systems such as LibGuides, ILLiad and Alma/Primo. Work with OCIO, OUR, and other departments to streamline processes and procedures for transferring records between departments.
  • Serve as lead for the LRC's use of a website builder (e.g. LibSites) and advise or coordinate with other LRC librarians to update and maintain the LRC's website and library guides.
  • Liaison with the designated IT Service Desk staff, situated in the LRC, coordinating with them on projects that require interdepartmental support. Staff weekly shifts on the LRC's circulation desk to provide front-line assistance to patrons. When necessary, staff the LRC's AMI desk. Also, when necessary, meet with OCIO staff members to identify how best to configure LRC resources to work on the University's network.
  • Prepare documentation on LRC licensed resources for the configuration control board (CCB) annually. Manage and update documentation from year to year. Coordinate with ISD to ensure resources are properly configured and integrated with USU's IT systems for security.

Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree in Library Science or STEM degree required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of information science, principles, ethics, methods, techniques, and automated information systems.
  • Knowledge of hands - on experience with library information systems (e.g. ExLibris Alma/Primo), a variety of library software (e.g. ILLiad, EZproxy, BrowZine, Springshare products), MARC, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Apps, Adobe products, EndNote, and scanning software.
  • Ability to work with people with varying levels of computer skills, as well as the ability to make technology understandable to the library community.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate with a diverse group of people.
  • Strong organizational, project and time management skills.
  • An ability to work in a team environment and effectively collaborate.
  • Applicants must obtain the Primo VE Administration and Alma Administration Certfications within one year of hire.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

Physical Capabilities

  • Requires bending, stooping, carrying, and lifting of light items such as books and paper.
  • Periods of standing and walking.
  • Long periods of sitting.
  • Handles telephone inquiries.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $61,000 - $90,000 . Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
