HJF is seeking a Laboratory Technician I to perform laboratory procedures to assist supervisors with various testing, assays, and experiments. Provides support in various areas of a laboratory as needed. Complies with laboratory quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) plans and procedures.

This position will be in support of the AAHI award under the direction of Dr. Brody for a total of 8 weeks. This position will be in support of The Uniformed Services University Department of Neurology. Focused on Acute AHI Investigations for 8 weeks.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

This is a temporary, full time position expected to run from June 1st-July 24th.


  • Conduct dry lab research, including comprehensive literature reviews on COVID-19- and TBI-related brain fog, to identify potential correlations with AAHI patient populations.
  • Support the expansion of the AAHI study through data collection, implementation of novel research methodologies, and evaluation of diagnostic technologies to enhance study outcomes and overall research quality.
  • Perform and support complex laboratory experiments, scientific techniques, and research procedures to advance ongoing projects.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and fully operational laboratory environment in compliance with laboratory safety and quality standards.
  • Maintain and monitor in vitro models, including bacterial and fungal cultures, to support experimental objectives.
  • Compile, organize, and assist in the analysis of experimental data using scientific and statistical methods.
  • Assist in the preparation, writing, and editing of research materials, presentations, and scientific documentation.
  • Prepare and communicate updates on the status and progress of research activities to project stakeholders and supervisors.
  • Maintain accurate, secure, and well-organized research records, including proper documentation in assigned laboratory notebooks and databases.

Education and Experience

  • Associate's Degree required.
  • Minimum of 0-2 years of experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of laboratory and research techniques required.
  • Experience engineering transgenic Pichia pastoris strains for recombinant protein expression.
  • Prior experience working in a military environment.
  • Skilled in conducting primary research and literature reviews.
  • Ability to follow written protocols and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain organized records.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and other basic computer applications.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work safely in a laboratory or research environment.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods

Work Environment

  • Work is conducted primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation

  • The hourly pay range for this position is $19.33-$30.00. Actual hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.

Employment with HJF is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, which may include, but is not limited to, contacting your professional references, verification of previous employment, education and credentials, a criminal background check, and a department of motor vehicle (DMV) check if applicable.
