About the Job
IT is seeking an energetic, detail-oriented, and customer service-focused professional to work as part of a team that supports the university's audiovisual technology in classrooms, computer labs, student study and gathering spaces, and conference rooms, and coordinates multimedia equipment checkout. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong technical troubleshooting skills, effective communication, the ability to manage competing priorities, and a commitment to delivering reliable, high-quality AV experiences that support teaching, learning, and campus events.

This full-time position is 40 hours per week, on-site (Duluth campus), and is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management of standardized audiovisual systems and equipment. This role requires strong customer service skills and regular interaction with faculty and staff, as well as assisting with the supervision and training of student staff working at the AV Checkout and Classroom Technology Desk.

The position reports to the Academic Technology Manager and works closely with the
Classroom Technology and Media Desk Supervisor for day-to-day work assignments, as well as with other IT teams and campus partners

Job Duties

  • Select, install, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain audiovisual technologies such as control systems, projectors, displays, lighting, microphones, speakers, cameras, lecture capture systems, and related equipment.
  • Maintain system integrity and reliability, including diagnosing issues in integrated control systems (e.g., Crestron, Extron), performing preventative maintenance, applying firmware/software updates, and leading or supporting equipment upgrades to ensure high availability of classroom and event technologies.
  • Configure and maintain Crestron and Extron control systems, including programming interfaces, system logic, and device communication.
  • Monitor and respond to service requests and incidents through a ticketing system, meeting established service level expectations and ensuring timely resolution and clear communication with users.
  • Maintain and support multimedia equipment (e.g., DSLR cameras, video and audio equipment) available for checkout, including inventory tracking, testing, and user readiness.
  • Assist in planning and executing AV projects, including system design input, equipment evaluation, documentation, and coordination with vendors and internal stakeholders.
  • Create and maintain accurate documentation for AV systems, configurations, standard operating procedures, and user guides.
  • Provide professional guidance, training, and day-to-day support to student employees, including task delegation and quality assurance of work.
  • Consult with faculty and staff to assess classroom and event technology needs, recommend appropriate solutions, and support effective use of AV technologies in teaching and learning environments.
  • Deliver training and instructional support to faculty and staff on the use of classroom and event technologies, both one-on-one and in group settings.
  • Collaborate with IT teams (networking, systems, security) to ensure AV systems are integrated, secure, and aligned with institutional standards.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development, including training, certifications, and participation in conferences, to stay current with industry best practices and emerging technologies.
  • Ensure all managed systems align with University policies, including accessibility (e.g., ADA compliance, captioning support) and security standards.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and climb ladders to work at heights.
  • Manual dexterity to install and manipulate AV and computer equipment, including use of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments, including classrooms, mechanical spaces, and event venues.
  • Vision to read printed materials and computer screens.
  • Hearing and speech sufficient to communicate effectively in person, in writing, and over the phone.
  • May be required to work outside of normal business hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends, to support events or maintenance windows.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and at least two years of relevant experience; or a master's degree in a related field.
  • Experience supporting, troubleshooting, and maintaining audiovisual systems in a professional environment.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate technical information clearly to non-technical users.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to diagnose complex technical issues.
  • Ability to take initiative, manage time effectively, and work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience using service management/ticketing systems to track and resolve issues.
  • Interest in and ability to learn new and emerging AV and educational technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and hands-on experience with audiovisual system design, installation, and integration.
  • Experience with AV control systems (e.g., Crestron, Extron, or similar), including basic programming or configuration.
  • Familiarity with video conferencing platforms (e.g., Zoom).
  • Experience supporting AV in higher education or a similar enterprise environment.
  • Knowledge of multimedia equipment such as DSLR cameras, video cameras, and professional audio gear.
  • Experience managing small-to-medium AV projects, including coordination with vendors.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.

Pay Range: $70,000 - $85,000 per year; depending on education/qualifications/experience
