Job Title: Medical Lab Scientist I
Location: UAB St. Vincent's East, Birmingham, AL
Duration: 3 Months (Contract - Potential for Extension/Conversion) Shift/Schedule:
- 1st Shift - 1st/ 6am-230pm
- 4x10 schedule
- Every other weekend (schedule set 1 month in advance)
- 40 hours per week
Job Summary
We are seeking a Medical Lab Scientist I with Microbiology experience to join the team at UAB St. Vincent's East in Birmingham, AL. This role primarily supports the Microbiology lab, including culture setup, plate reading, and susceptibility testing, while also assisting with general laboratory duties. This is a contract position covering FMLA with strong potential for conversion. Key Responsibilities
- Determine the acceptability of specimens according to established criteria
- Perform Microbiology procedures including culture setup, plate reading, organism identification, and susceptibilities
- Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation
- Prepare and evaluate reagents and controls
- Report accurate and timely test results
- Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures
- Maintain and replenish lab supplies
- Assist with specimen processing as needed
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols and PPE usage
- Support general lab duties and potential team lead responsibilities
Requirements & Qualifications Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or related field
- Or equivalent qualifications per CLIA regulations
Experience:
- 0-2 years of clinical laboratory experience
- Microbiology experience required (culture work, plate reading, susceptibilities)
Certifications:
- ASCP or AMT certification preferred (open to eligible candidates)
- State license if required by Alabama regulations
- Must pass a color vision screening
Skills & Competencies
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Strong attention to detail
- Good communication and organizational skills
- Computer proficiency; Cerner LIS experience is a plus
- Flexibility to work overtime or different shifts as needed
Preferred Skills
- Generalist experience in Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, or Coagulation
- Prior team lead or supervisory experience
- Receive and process samples, run testing kits. Set ups, May be responsible for maintenance, documentation QC
Generalist with Micro experience Read plates, reading susceptibilities, gen lab, also looking for team lead
Must have at least 2 years of documented experience in reading bacteriology plates/media in Microbiology
