Direct and oversee all medical care rendered to patients within the Pediatric Emergency Department while on duty. Supervise the clinical care, procedures, charting, and interactions with patients and staff by residents, interns, students.


Clinical and Professional responsibilities

Clinical and Professional responsibilities for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician include:

  • Provide a minimum of 72 hours of clinical coverage per month (9 shifts/month) for a total annual target of 864 hours/year, which can be proportionally reduced by approved vacation use (must be used in 8-hour increments)

  • Work a minimum of two - three (2-3) weekends/month, depending on departmental needs.

  • Work a minimum of two - three (2-3) nights/month, depending upon departmental needs.

  • Work a minimum of one (1) 24-hour "on call" shift per month (or equivalent), depending upon departmental needs.

  • Work a minimum of three (3) minor holiday blocks/year and one (1) major holiday block/year, depending upon departmental needs

  • Direct and oversee all medical and surgical care rendered to patients within the Pediatric Emergency Department while on duty. Clinical effort will be split between different DEM clinical sites depending on departmental need.

  • Maintain up to date credentialing appointment and privileging at their designated hospital(s).

  • Maintain WOS academic appointment in Volunteer Clinical Professor Series at appropriate rank in accordance with UCSF Academic Personnel Manual 279. https://academicaffairs.ucsf.edu/academic-personnel/appointment-advancementreviews/ucsf_series.php

  • Facilitate and support faculty-led research activities in the Emergency Department when working clinically.

  • Supervise residents, medical students, physician assistants and nurse practitioners while working in the ED.

  • Meet CMS documentation standards and complete medical records for all patient visits in timely manner.

  • Provide adequate clinical availability to your Division's scheduler in a timely manner, including for nights/weekends/holidays.

  • Participate in the on-call back-up attending coverage rotation.

  • Promptly arrange for coverage if you must miss a clinical shift.

  • Demonstrate professionalism by timely arrival for shifts, appropriate attire and demeanor, maintaining working relationships with nursing and clerical staff and consultants, and thorough communication about transitions of care.

  • Attend at least 4 faculty meetings at your primary clinical site per academic year.

  • Participate on departmental clinical committees or task forces as requested by your Chief or Department Chair.

  • Comply with all University and Departmental policies.

  • Maintain, regularly check and respond to email from a UCSF secure email account.

  • Maintain up-to-date credentialing and privileging at designated hospital(s)

Teaching and Administrative responsibilities include:

Teaching responsibilities:

  • Teach and evaluate residents and medical students while working in the ED.

  • Appropriately complete resident and medical student end-of-shift evaluations in a timely manner, including off-service residents.

  • Maintain an average MedHub teaching score of 3 or above (based upon resident evaluations).

  • Attend at least 16 hours per year of resident teaching conferences/PEM fellowship conferences.

  • Perform at least 4 hours of active teaching from activities listed as core teaching and at least 4 hours from the department-approved list or additional core teaching.

Administrative responsibilities:

  • Abide by policies of the Medical Staff offices at all designated hospitals and the Department of Emergency Medicine.

  • Notify Division Chief and site scheduler of clinic days to be missed because of annual leave or CME (Continuing Medical Education) meetings at least 60 days in advance. Clinical sessions which you may want to cancel < 60 days are subject to approval by the Division Chief, and generally must be rescheduled within 1-2 weeks of the missed session.

  • Participate in leadership of continuous quality improvement efforts and LEAN activities.

  • Engage in robust citizenship and support of the practice.

  • Enroll patients in clinical studies (along with required Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) / other required training completion) as needed.


Required Qualification

  • A license to practice medicine issued by the California Board of Medical Examiners
  • Board Certification in Emergency Medicine AND Pediatrics, or
  • Board Certification/Board Eligibility in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
  • At ZSFG, this position also requires maintaining certification as a Base Hospital Physician.
  • You must apply for and be approved for privileges with the Medical Staff Office at UCSF Medical Center/Oakland and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center before you can provide patient care.
