Overview:

We are seeking a Radiological Engineer who will provide professional level support for the operation of a diverse range of radiological instrumentation to meet needs throughout Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Areas of focus include the Radiological Effluent Stack Monitoring program, the Central Radiological Counting Laboratory, the Portable Nondestructive Assay (NDA) program, and the Whole-Body Counting Facility. This position resides within the Nuclear and Radiological Measurements (NRM) team of the Nuclear Measurements and Analytical Services (NMAS) Group of the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD) under the Environmental, Safety, Health, and Quality Directorate atOak Ridge National Laboratory(ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Support the day-to-day operation of the radiological effluent stack monitoring program to ensure continued and reliable operation.
  • Perform system calibrations, validations, and verifications.
  • Maintain equipment and troubleshoot/investigate instrumentation faults and alarms.
  • Participate in audits, inspections, verifications, and surveillances.
  • Support development and perform calculations to support growing/evolving needs for existing and new radiological stack monitoring systems as required.
  • Provide technical guidance for the operation of instrumentation within the Central NPRD Radiological Counting Lab, which consists of fixed high purity germanium detectors, alpha spectrometers, gross alpha/beta counters, and a liquid scintillation counter.
  • Develop technical basis documents, technical evaluations, operational procedures, and other reports.
  • Perform in-situ NDA, which includes collecting spectral information, modeling system efficiencies, data reduction, and reporting of the results.
  • Serve on the ORNL Emergency Operations Center support Team.
  • Participate in incident/accident investigations of potential radiological releases.
  • Support other activities in the Nuclear Measurements and Analytical Services Group as needed.
  • Guide and mentor junior staff.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS/BA degree in science, health physics, nuclear engineering, physics, chemistry, or a related technical field.
  • Fiveor more years of professional experience in health physics, nuclear engineering, nondestructive assay, or operational radiation protection.
  • Demonstrated experience with nuclear measurements and gamma spectroscopy applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a technical science discipline or engineering with a concentration in health physics withfour or more years of experience.
  • Advanced computing skills, including data reduction, analysis, and presentation.
  • Experience with spectroscopic radiological effluent monitors and other advanced radiological instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of Mirion's Genie, In-situ Object Counting System (ISOCS), and Horizon software applications.
  • Working knowledge of radiation detection instrumentation and principles of airborne radioactivity monitoring.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

  • Physical Requirements:Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.

  • Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions.   • To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation.
