What Your Job Will Be Like

Our Managed Care Program Equipment Sustainment System Engineer leads the lifecycle support for current MESA equipment and systems, enabling us to effectively sustain our capabilities until the end of the system's life and/or during MELP (MESA Life Extension Program) replacement. This lead will apply integrated technical judgement utilizing scientific methods and data collection to improve processes, systems, and make decisions. You will ensure efficient management of the program which features customized supplier service contracts that secure system coverage, allowing us to obtain the necessary support from specific suppliers at the required levels and at the right time much like an insurance policy. In this role you will develop solid relationships with our most crucial suppliers, enable MESA fabs to prioritize funding, contracts, and resources to mitigate our most critical equipment risks. This role will have the opportunity to be embedded in several cross functional groups and participate in a broad array of activities key to MESA sustainment.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Work closely with MESA engineers, Strategic Global Supply Chain Analyst, facilities engineers, and suppliers to support widely variety of equipment reliability, support, and sustainment projects.
  • Develop technical expertise in MESA systems and equipment, current and future state, to aid in proper maintenance planning efforts.
  • Including but not limited to: mechanical systems, electrical systems, equipment installation design, and critical safety systems.
  • Provide project management support and coordination, creation of process documentation, and development of tools to aid in reporting and tracking of projects across many stakeholders.
  • Coordinate among MESA operations, MELP team, and supply chain to reduce overall impact to production, while progressing projects in line with approved NNSA scope, cost, and schedule.
  • Direct systematic studies toward fuller knowledge to enable planning and scope development of Managed Care Contracts for MESA tools and a wide range of facility and infrastructure projects.
  • Be an active member of 5290 team activities and program maturation.

*Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$117,500 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.   • DOE Q security clearance or equivalent required to start with the ability to acquire and maintain a DOE SCI clearance.
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D System Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Use of engineering principles to understand complex systems, gather data, and solve problems.
  • Experience designing and developing tools for tracking status and reporting metrics to stakeholders.
  • Background Initiating, designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating new processes, products, or systems through basic and applied research.
  • Experience with the various subsystem teams to verify complex requirements, often from a combination of analysis and real time data.
  • Demonstrated skill in using risk-based approaches to prioritize work or projects experience in Microsystems and or/production equipment or facilities, infrastructure, and processes.
About Our Team

Department 5292 is responsible for the integration of programmatic and operational strategic activities focused on sustaining the MESA capability into the future. Specifically, we sustain MESA by partnering with functional experts across the Laboratory to build an integrated operational system enabling continual delivery to our national security mission. We rely on SMEs and their processes where they exist and where they don't exist, we build them. These processes enable MESA to have an accurate understanding of what work MESA should be doing, understand if MESA is accomplishing its goals and objectives, and what MESA can do to continuously improve.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
