Job Overview
The Phlebotomist obtains high-quality patient blood samples through venipuncture or capillary puncture using aseptic techniques customized to the patient's age and level of difficulty. This role is vital to patient care, managing the entire pre-analytical process from strict patient identification to preparing and tracking specimens within hospital information systems. Working within an interdisciplinary network, the Phlebotomist ensures exceptional service, strict safety compliance, and seamless communication with medical staff.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school graduate or equivalent educational credential.
  • Successful completion of a formal Phlebotomy training program or equivalent professional work experience.
  • Valid New Jersey State Driver's License.
  • Strong baseline of interpersonal skills and telephone communication skills for medical office liaison.
  • Successful completion of all required hospital and departmental orientation programs.

Preferred:

  • National Phlebotomy Certification (e.g., ASCP, AMT, or NHA).
  • Prior experience managing specimen collection, retrieval, and statusing functions within Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
  • Experience conducting specialized diagnostic collections, such as standardized bleeding time tests.

Essential Functions

  • Obtains blood samples via venipuncture or capillary puncture on adult inpatients and outpatients using vacutainers, butterflies, microtainers, and blood culture collection tools.
  • Executes flawless patient and specimen identification protocols in strict compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.
  • Performs all necessary specimen collection processing, tracking, statusing, and retrieval tasks on both the main Hospital and Laboratory Information Systems.
  • Assesses clinical risks prior to procedures by inquiring if patients are taking blood thinners, and instructs individuals on appropriate site pressure and bandage care guidelines.
  • Orients and instructs new departmental associates and phlebotomy students on technical skills, safety guidelines, and clinical workflows as requested.
  • Manages departmental resources by organizing the phlebotomy storeroom and maintaining a clean, fully stocked personal blood draw tray.
  • Demonstrates total safety compliance regarding physical operational equipment hazards and Category I environmental risks involving blood and body fluid exposure.
