Overview

Department: Atlantic Targets & Marine Operations / Solomons Targets Detachment
Position Type: Temporary (up to 6 months)

Job Summary:
We are seeking a motivated Entry-Level Welder to support the Atlantic Targets and Marine Operations Division. This temporary position will support multiple systems on a variety of projects on land and at sea. The ideal candidate will assist with basic welding, metal fabrication, and boat operations. You will work under established guidelines for recurring assignments and receive explicit instruction on unfamiliar tasks. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic, mission-focused maritime environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

    Fabricate and manufacture metal parts for later assembly.
  • Follow blueprints to ensure exact specifications of output.
  • Produce strong, clean welds and help test outputs to ensure the strength and tolerance of welds.
  • Assist in boat operations and maintenance on both mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Provide shipboard support, including the launching and recovery of small boats.
  • Learn and participate in functions beyond normal operations; training will be provided for marine operations at sea.

Experience, Skills, and Requirements:

  • Experience: 0-2 years of general mechanical, welding, or boat operations experience (Tech I level). Prior manufacturing environment experience is a plus.
  • Technical Skills: Familiarity with common welding tools and procedures, including MIG welding, TIG welding, metal fabricating, grinding, and finishing metals.
  • Travel & Schedule: Must be able to work overtime, occasional weekends, and varying hours.
  • Attributes: Good oral and written communication skills, self-starter, flexible, and team-oriented.

Education Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Post-high school technical/trade school training and professional certifications/licenses are highly desired.

Clearance & Security Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must be able to obtain and hold a United States Department of Defense (DoD) Interim Secret Security Clearance and maintain it throughout employment.
  • All candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening.

Work Conditions & Physical Demands:

  • Environment: Conditions will vary daily. Work is performed in enclosed buildings (metal shop, wood shop, paint booth, engine shop, warehouse spaces), at desks for data/report entry, and outdoors on small boats in local waters and offshore fleet operating areas.
  • Physicality: Work includes sitting, standing, walking, lifting, and reaching. Must be physically capable of transferring between vessels at sea.
  • Lifting: Applicant must be capable of lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 100 lbs.
  • Vision: Visual abilities needed include close vision depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus.
