Description and Requirements

Position Overview

Lenovo is seeking Automation & Maintenance Engineers to support line side production operations within a highly automated manufacturing environment. Unlike facilities maintenance roles, this position is focused specifically on production equipment, automation systems, robotics, and PLC driven machinery.

In this role, engineers will be responsible for maintaining equipment uptime, troubleshooting complex production issues, supporting automation integration, and enabling scale as new collaborative robots and systems are deployed. The ideal candidate brings a blended background across robotics, automation, and hands on mechanical and electrical maintenance, with the ability to quickly diagnose issues and work directly with highly technical production equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Automation & Production Equipment Support

  • Provide hands on, line side maintenance and technical support for production automation systems (this role does not include facilities or building maintenance).
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and optimize motors, belts, drives, conveyors, sensors, actuators, and other electro mechanical production equipment.
  • Respond to equipment faults and downtime events, perform structured recovery procedures, and safely restore systems to full production.
  • Identify recurring failure modes and recommend corrective actions to improve uptime, reliability, and throughput.

PLC & Controls

  • Read, understand, and troubleshoot PLC ladder logic to support production equipment performance.
  • Enter PLC control panels and systems to review logic, diagnose faults, verify I/O, and make basic program adjustments or modifications as needed.
  • Partner with controls, automation, and manufacturing teams to ensure PLC programs align with production requirements, safety standards, and operational goals.

Robotics

  • Support the teaching, troubleshooting, calibration, and adjustment of collaborative robots used in production.
  • Use teach pendants and/or remote programming tools to safely modify robot paths, points, and locations.
  • Apply and enforce safe robot operation practices, including use of dead man switches, manual jogging, controlled programming modes, and proper lockout procedures.

General Maintenance

  • Perform routine and corrective mechanical and electrical maintenance, including replacement of motors, drives, belts, tubing, sensors, and related components.
  • Fine tune conveyor systems, verify speeds, alignments, and operational parameters, and confirm proper system performance.
  • Complete preventative maintenance activities, maintain maintenance records and documentation, and support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing downtime and improving efficiency.

Cross Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with automation engineers, robotics teams, manufacturing supervisors, and operations leadership to resolve issues and support production goals.
  • Provide technical input during hiring, interviews, and skill assessments for maintenance or automation roles as needed.
  • Support the scale up of automation and maintenance capabilities as new production phases and headcount are approved
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications (Required)

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related field, or equivalent hands on industry experience
  • 5+ years of experience supporting production automation systems in a manufacturing environment (not facilities maintenance)
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with motors, conveyors, belts, drives, sensors, and electro mechanical systems
  • Working knowledge of PLC systems, including the ability to read ladder logic and perform basic diagnostics or modifications
  • Experience safely working within industrial control panels and electrical systems
  • Hands on experience supporting, maintaining, or interacting with industrial or collaborative robotic systems
  • Proven ability to perform equipment fault recovery, root cause analysis, and system restoration in a live production environment
  • Solid understanding of industrial safety practices, including LOTO, machine guarding, and safe robot operation
  • Ability to work on site in a fast paced manufacturing environment, including shift work or on call support as required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with PLC platforms such as Siemens, Allen Bradley (Rockwell), or similar
  • Hands on experience with robot teaching, programming, and calibration using teach pendants
  • Familiarity with automation system integration, optimization, and process improvements
  • Experience fine tuning conveyor systems and high volume production lines
  • Strong diagnostic skills using HMIs, SCADA systems, and industrial software tools
  • Background in highly automated manufacturing environments (e.g., automotive, electronics, robotics, fulfillment, advanced manufacturing)
  • Exposure to continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, or Kaizen
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and system layouts
