CVICU Overview The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at The George Washington University Hospital specializes in the care of critically ill cardiac and cardiothoracic surgery patients. Our team manages complex cases including post open-heart surgery recovery (CABG, valve replacements), advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support devices (IABP, Impella), and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). The CVICU provides a fast-paced, highly specialized environment where nurses develop deep expertise in hemodynamic monitoring, cardiac pharmacology, and advanced life support therapies while collaborating with leading cardiac surgeons and intensivists. ResponsibilitiesPatient Care: Deliver compassionate, evidence-based nursing care to critically ill cardiovascular patients, including post-operative cardiac surgery and advanced heart failure cases. Monitoring: Utilize advanced hemodynamic monitoring systems to assess cardiac function, interpret rhythms, and manage devices such as arterial lines, central lines, and pulmonary artery catheters. Respond rapidly to changes in patient condition. Specialized Therapies: Manage and support patients requiring mechanical circulatory devices such as IABP, Impella, ventricular assist devices (VADs), and ECMO. Collaboration: Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary cardiac care team, including cardiothoracic surgeons, intensivists, perfusionists, and respiratory therapists to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Critical Thinking: Apply advanced clinical judgment in the assessment, planning, and delivery of care for patients with complex cardiovascular conditions. Advocacy: Serve as an advocate for patients and families, providing education, emotional support, and clear communication throughout the care continuum. Documentation: Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation of patient assessments, interventions, and responses to treatment. Education: Educate patients and families on cardiac procedures, recovery expectations, medications, and lifestyle modifications post-discharge. Quality Improvement: Participate in unit-based initiatives to enhance quality, safety, and evidence-based practice in cardiovascular critical care. Qualifications
