Job Description

We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Research Specialist I to support a Principal Investigator (PI) in biochemical research focused on anti-nutritional compounds in dry beans. This role offers hands-on laboratory experience and the opportunity to contribute to applied agricultural and food science research aimed at improving the nutritional quality of dry bean cultivars.

The Research Specialist I will apply a variety of biochemical and molecular techniques to quantify and characterize key anti-nutritional proteins, including lectins (phytohemagglutinins), trypsin inhibitors, and chymotrypsin inhibitors. The position supports research efforts to identify and develop dry bean germplasm with reduced levels of anti-nutritional factors, contributing to advancements in crop improvement and human nutrition.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Principal Investigator with biochemical and molecular analyses of anti-nutritional compounds in dry bean samples
  • Perform laboratory techniques including SDS-PAGE, 1-D electrophoresis, enzyme activity assays, and Western blot (immunoblot) analysis
  • Measure trypsin and chymotrypsin inhibitor activity in dry bean germplasm
  • Analyze protein concentrations using antibody-based detection methods
  • Screen dry bean germplasm to identify lines deficient in anti-nutritional factors
  • Support the identification and inactivation of anti-nutritional components under PI guidance
  • Learn, apply, and follow established research protocols to screen dry bean germplasm
  • Assist in identifying null lines deficient in anti-nutritional factors
  • Perform accurate data entry and assist with basic data management
  • Handle and organize seed materials for research trials
  • Assist in the preparation of research reports and documentation
  • Help maintain and update research protocols and laboratory records
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Shift

Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Plant Science or related field

Prior experience in legume research is preferred.

Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $17.43 -$20.00 hourly.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
