The Neurosurgery Advanced Practice Provider Fellow is geared for the new graduates and newly licensed Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.

The 12 -month long program with didactic learning opportunities as the post graduate transitions to being a provider. The APP fellow will gain experience in neurosurgical procedures and skill set during the fellowship. This role is intended to provide guidance for new providers to learn to provide safe and therapeutic neurosurgical care in management of brain and spine patients. The experience gained in through the 12 -month rotations from ambulatory, operating room and post operative care sets up the Advanced Practice Provider for a successful career in neurosurgery.

Neurosurgery Advanced Practice Provider Fellow Job Responsibilities:

  • Completes clinical rotations and required clinical hours actively participating as a member of the care team under the supervision of an assigned, experienced preceptor
  • Attends and participates in the scheduled didactic classes and clinical simulation labs as required
  • Participates and contributes in assigned case presentations, quality improvement projects, and participate in a variety of professional development and leadership opportunities
  • Independently and in collaboration with primary preceptor, physician(s) and interdisciplinary team members, performs high quality clinical practice and effective patient management by providing safe and competent care to patients
  • Demonstrates technical expertise by performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures independently as required
  • Demonstrates teamwork by communicating effectively and working cooperatively with all members of the health care team
  • Performs neurological examination, consultation, admission, and management of neuro critical care patients, while practicing and implementing the attending neurosurgeon's plan
  • Collaborates with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to provide quality world-class patient care
  • Demonstrates respect for interdisciplinary team members' contribution for best patient outcomes
  • Fosters collaborative, positive, educationally -constructive and open communication with all Inova Team members for best patient outcomes
  • Participates in quality and best practice initiatives by utilizing standards and guidelines for to continuously improve delivery of care and patient outcomes
  • Provides patient care and participates in the Fellowship in a style that encompasses the Inova Values
  • May perform additional duties as assigned

Additional Requirements:

Education: Graduate of a Master's degree in Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program, accredited by American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or Physician Assistant program and certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)

License: Pass the certification examination for Adult-Gerontology, Acute Care or Family Nurse Practitioner offered by ANCC or pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE)

Experience: No experience required.

Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) upon start

Licensure: Licensed Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner, in Virginia Department of Health Professions.

  • RN license in the state of Virginia. Upon offering of the Advanced Practice Provider Fellow position, signing the agreement for Scope of Practice as an Advanced Practice Provider for Inova and practice agreement with a supervising neurosurgery physician
  • Drug Enforcement Administration License

Medical Staff and Payor Credentialing: Successful completion of credentialing for Medical Staff membership and Payor enrollment and appropriate clinical privileges sufficient to perform all required services, Ability to successfully complete the credentialing process and background checks by third-party agencies. Ability to enroll as a CMS Medicare/Medicaid payor.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience or clinical rotations in neuroscience units.
  • Experience or clinical rotations in PACU caring for neuroscience patients.
