What You'll Do:
  • Analyze analog, digital, and power circuits.
  • Read and understand detailed schematics.
  • Troubleshoot at the system and circuit level.
  • Understand high-voltage power supplies, modulators, pulse systems, interlocks, controls, and protection circuits.
  • Use oscilloscopes, differential probes, current transformers, HV probes, data loggers, and other test equipment.
  • Understand grounding, shielding, noise, transients, pulse behavior, and measurement errors.
  • Work with PLCs, control systems, sensors, relays, and interlocks.
  • Support RF-related test equipment and instrumentation.
  • Develop test plans and commissioning procedures.
  • Review equipment failures and determine root cause.
  • Write specifications for new test systems and replacement equipment.
  • Evaluate vendor proposals for technical fit, not just price.
  • Support CapEx justifications with practical technical and business reasoning.
  • Lead equipment upgrade projects.
  • Help replace obsolete systems with modern equipment.
  • Work with vendors such as ScandiNova, Colorado Power, DTI, Ampegon, Stangenes, and others
  • Create practical specifications.
  • Review layouts, power requirements, cooling requirements, safety requirements, and commissioning plans.
  • Support CapEx planning and justify upgrades based on downtime, safety, productivity, energy savings, and spare parts risk.
  • Mentor technicians without taking every job away from them.
  • Help build training material for younger technicians.
  • Transfer knowledge before senior people retire.
  • They will be managing projects.
  • Mentoring/advising the technicians.
Job Requirements
What You'll Bring:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • 5+ years of experience with circuit analysis and troubleshooting.
  • 5+ years of experience with power electronics, controls, instrumentation, or industrial equipment.
  • 5+ years of experience working with technicians and production equipment.
  • 5+ years of hardware experience.
What Sets You Apart:
  • Strong hardware background.
  • Ability to lead technical projects from concept through commissioning.
  • Ability to write clear technical requirements and review vendor proposals.
  • This person should have strong electrical engineering fundamentals, but also be comfortable troubleshooting real equipment on the production floor.
  • This engineer should be able to lead technical problem solving, support technicians, improve legacy systems, write specifications for replacement equipment, work with vendors, and help modernize aging test infrastructure.
  • The engineer should be comfortable with or capable of learning:
    1. Klystron test systems.
    2. Coupled cavity tube test systems.
    3. TWT and magnetron support equipment.
    4. High-voltage modulators.
    5. PFN systems.
    6. Grid pulse systems.
    7. Mod-anode systems.
    8. Crowbar circuits.
    9. Interlock systems.
    10. Heater supplies, bias supplies, magnet supplies, body current monitoring, cathode current monitoring, and RF drive/protection systems.
    11. Legacy systems where the original experts may have retired.
  • Strong electrical fundamentals.
  • Willing to go to the floor and look at the actual equipment.
  • Able to work with technicians respectfully.
  • Able to troubleshoot logically under production pressure.
  • Able to explain technical issues clearly to non-engineers.
  • Does not overcomplicate simple problems.
  • Able to handle old equipment and incomplete documentation.
  • Able to balance safety, production urgency, and long-term reliability.
  • Comfortable with both design review and hands-on troubleshooting.
  • Able to turn a technical problem into a practical action plan.
  • Able to troubleshoot at the system and circuit level.
  • Understand high voltage power supplies.
